4.8 Swap LJ

Fortunately engine temp was my error, gauge wasn’t plugged in.

I do have a weird noise at slow speeds. Hoping it’s my exhaust tapping something. I’ll give it the shakedown tomorrow. I am nervous it could be rotational (trans, converter, driveshaft) but trying to cross the obvious first. I don’t notice at speed but exhaust isn’t exactly quiet.

Hoping to get the fan hooked up and programmed as well tomorrow, maybe if I’m ambitious build the rest of the exhaust this weekend.

Noises are such a PITA to track down sometimes. If you have a GoPro or access to one put it under your rig in multiple spots pointed where you think it is and go for a short drive each time.
I got a magnetic holder off Amazon for cheap.

Good plan, I do have one.

Good news, it seems tune is pretty good.
Bad news, definitely have a driveline issue. We suspect it’s in transfer case as rear yoke gets pretty hot with short amount of driving. I will be pulling it tomorrow night.

I did call in a couple ringers who know Jeeps as well as anyone and both have LS swapped LJ’s, hopefully it’s a stupid simple fix and back on the road we go.

Without doing a search what did you do to adapt your t-case to your transmission?

Fingers crossed it's a easy fix...

Mostly a GM 231 case. It has some Jeep and some GM parts. Some concern the tube for pump wasn’t seated.

Hopefully all parts were compatible…. It’s making some racket but only in 2nd and 3rd gear. It doesn’t seem like its trans but impossible to tell.

I've seen the pump not seated properly cause a lot of issues. And I've seen guys use the NP231 from a Dodge and mate it to a Jeep NP231 so I'd assume the GM version isn't any different....

I'd take it back apart and look at things closely and then reassemble using a parts diagram or assembly diagram.

I left it at my buddy’s so he can assist me in looking it over when I tear it apart. I’m fairly confident in my abilities but he has way more experience than I do.

Found the problem tonight. I am an idiot and didn’t realize my new input bearing was thinner than the old one. GM bearing is roughly 0.300” thicker which is unsurprisingly critical for spacing. Planetary was able to rub the case.

Bearing is supposed to be at parts store by 3:00 tomorrow and this should be back on the road.

COOL.... Glad you figured it out... That is something many of us would have missed unless you were measuring every part or knew there was a difference.

It’s understandable but I should have been more careful. Not a ton of info out there on the 231-C’s and I couldn’t tell from research if there were differences. It is almost entirely a GM unit but with Jeep shift setup.

I am happy I took it to my buddy’s, 3 of us looked it over and compared to a wrecked 231J I had and finally figured out what the issue was. Working with a 2 post lift is super nice too….

Is the rear case half jeep?
