You could do it that way, or you could lift the whole body off the frame to make room to pop them out.

There is an oval shaped rubber plug in the firewall. I believe it fills the hole where the auto transmission kick down cable goes through. Might not even be on that new of a TJ. Anywho, interested in that if it has one.
