1st or 2nd gear start-offs

1st on flat ground from a stop, 2nd if I'm already rolling slightly or pointing downhill.

As for when to shift, it all depends on conditions. Cruising on flat ground at a consistent low speed? 1,500 RPM is plenty. Merging onto the freeway on a short ramp? Floor it and shift at redline. Basically you use as much gear as you need for the situation.

Don't be afraid to skip gears too, especially with the 6-speed. Here in the Pittsburgh region, people tend to accelerate a lot harder than they do in other regions. (Probably a learned behavior from the hills and oddball road designs.) So it's not unusual for me to run it up to 3,500-4,000 in 2nd or 3rd and then skip a gear (or even two) into 4th or 5th to cruise.

If I'm cruising along at 1,800 RPM in 6th gear and then get an opportunity to pass someone, I'll shift straight from 6 to 3 and then run it right up to redline before going to 4th. The 6 to 3 downshift is very easy to do smoothly, just simply double the RPM before dropping the clutch and flooring it.

holy shit dude, you really wind it up that much? I would never run mine that hard

Mine (all stock) really hits a wall right around 4700. It's like she's just gassed. I'll guess it's all intake side.

It is definitely very fun when a car keeps pulling all the way to the limiter though.

Not saying I've never hit mine on my Jeep, of course

Intake, or a partially plugged catalytic converter. A restriction on either end makes a heck of a negative difference. As does worn spark plugs or temperamental injectors.

I have the Windstar intake and Magnaflow cats, but stock cat-back. Accidentally ran it to 6,000 RPM once (didn't notice the tune I had flashed raised the rev limiter, and then forgot I was driving stick) and it pulled hard to over 5,700...

Also as soon as catalyst over-temp protection kicks in, it runs hella rich and pulls timing like crazy. Dialing that back with a tuner makes a huge difference at all RPMs. (It actually improves emissions performance in most cases too.)

My 2 cents:
In my 05 Lj after Ax15 swapping it with its current 5.13 gearing on 33s, I rarely use 1st So 2nd gear starts it is. Unless I'm uphill,or in slow traffic I'll shift into 1st. It cruises at a nice slow <5mph pace which comes in handy!

With that said,I need to go down to a 4.56. 3500 Rpm while cruising at 80 sucks...

1st is so short in my 6 speed 05 that I start in second a lot of the time. My mustang will do 60 in first and I know it’s a completely different type of vehicle… but dang I’m not used to shifting so early

I'm pretty sure I've never touched limiter in my Jeep. I feel that wall and there's no reason to push into it. Where is the stock limiter?

It is definitely very fun when a car keeps pulling all the way to the limiter though.

That old Cobra I had was still hammering at the stock limiter. Back when I was riding rockets we used to live on the limiter. Nothing like tickling 13,000 and popping a gear to do it again. I still find it funny that I have a Jeep now.

It drops off really hard at the upper 4ks IMO

That's the thing, with the 4.0L it makes zero power after 4k RPM, so going all the way to redline just makes more noise and doesn't really do anything.

My BMW with the N52 3.0L inline-six had a 7k RPM redline, so you can bet that's when I shifted when merging.

Hmm I haven't redlined mine yet. Maybe that'll change my thinking it's a little underpowered for a 5 series

How are all the clutch dumps with 5.13 gears? I bet pretty awesome lol

I wasn't a powerhouse (235hp) but not bad for a RWD 3-series and sounded really good revving it out.

Probably better in a 3 than 5 series with AWD... But I've got another car if I want to drive fast anyways. One that'll soon redline at 8k

I agree with that, but I'd say up to 4500 the 4.0 is still doing something, but that wall is right around there.

The AWD definitely makes it lag a bit, one of my friends had the same car as me but AWD and you could feel the extra weight and drivetrain loss. Still fun though.
