1999 TJ headgasket or new head?

Thanks for all the replies. I do have a few days and a garage to use. I am at junkyard right now and there is 2 compatible heads. I may pull one just to have it in case. Without any way to test the head I'm grabbing any tell tale signs of thing I should look for to rule one or the other out?

It better say tupy,or I wouldn’t spend a dime on it.

He can't use a 0331 TUPY head. the 97-99 TJs use a distributor and have a notch for thatplus the correct accessory mounts.

You are looking for the casting number on the drivers side of the head. 0630 or7120

My head is a 0630. Thanks for helping me identify it. Last question. Do i save the rods n stuff that come out the donor and use them or use the ones out my head?

I definitely compare the sizes of the pushrods and see if there are any differences. And then evaluate which parts look the best.

That sounds like a guess. I would imagine there's a reason they say to putlabel everything and put it all back where it came from when doing the gasket. If I'm swapping heads does it matter if I reuse original or should I use them from the donor? Obviously no matter what rout I go I'm looking at a full rebuild in future after I get back to AZ.

Not if it runs good, when I did my head,I reused the pushrods and the rockers and balls.I noticed the stamped rockers had imprints of the oil lines from the balls,I was in a hurry tighten everything down to 20 ft lbs and drove it from Florida to Colorado, when I got off of trails I could hear them clattering a little(don’t hurt a thing) but when I got home I replaced pushrods rockers and balls from summit racing,(melling) and just the new parts alone took what play the 130,000 mile parts had.about 100.00 total.we used to just file a little off the stands and do the same thing, but it’s not much to do all new,did you get the head on yet?

No. Haven't even pulled the head. Got a 97 Tahoe started giving me a p0300 after I ran out of fuel and decided to focus on it instead but that's biting me in the ass.

Original plan was to come up to CO, load some stuff from storage on a small utility trailer, hitch it to my Jeep, drive jeep up on a tow dolly, hitch it to the dolly to the Tahoe and haul it all back to AZ.

Right now I'm stuck in Denver trying to figure the cheapest route to get as much of my stuff home as I can before Xmas.

It's looking like I'm going to take a gamble with the Blue Devil to get home and will leave Tahoe and pray it doesn't get towed as abandoned before I can get back to it.
