I agree in my other thread!IMO you need to wait on any TAD's and let them learn to pick lines and drive with open diffs. Then as they start to learn how to choose a good line over a poor one you can start thinking about adding a TAD.
This is how I learned and I think it's the better way to learn how to 4wheel.
Moab is going to be a whole new adventure now that you're on 35's. I don't think any of us will be able to keep up anymore. Thanks, that means a lot coming from a top echelon TJ owner. It will not be much more than a nice short arm build. I am willing to take it on any trail now, including Pritchett Canyon, JV, whatever. It’s actually difficult to say goodbye to the 33” world. I was kinda close to the top there. Now I’m just another TJ on 35’s. Glad you think it looks great. Almost everything I’ve done has been for function. Form has only played a secondary role in my decisions.
Stroke my ego Alex!Moab is going to be a whole new adventure now that you're on 35's. I don't think any of us will be able to keep up anymore.
With a good teacher the rig doesn't matter, you'll be fine.Truly I was thinking about this last knight and thinking, this is too much rig to start.
I just mean in the sense we built this so quick and it’s nice to grow driving skills step by step along the way. My own build went very slow: one change, drive, wheel, second change, drive, wheel…. I personally found that way easy to diagnose a problem and good for my driving skills. I could have a limit, then go out with a new mod and press past that limit. I just downright enjoyed it!With a good teacher the rig doesn't matter, you'll be fine.

Good advice. Locker is on their dime, so I suspect that will be awhile.I think where their Jeep is at right now is a good platform to learn from. But keep open diffs for now while they learn the art of picking a good line. Then once they both have a year of trails under their belts then start thinking about adding a traction aid. That's my $0.02 worth of advice.
I know that’s true. The first thing I really broke was a front axle shaft due to the locker’s rotational stress. The ear was the weak spot.AND, they will break less shit with a open diff. It sucks but it we all went through it.![]()
As long as they quickly learn to not let the wheel spin while they’re looking for traction…AND, they will break less shit with a open diff. It sucks but it we all went through it.![]()
I have a feeling by the time they do the math on that they'll be kicking themselves for letting the rubicon slip through.Good advice. Locker is on their dime, so I suspect that will be awhile.
I will say, starting with a Rubicon gives you the best of both worlds. Having selectable lockers is really nice. It lets you experiment with different scenarios and situations. I generally lock my rear just to keep it from blowing up, on the advice of Blaine, but I leave the front unlocked most of the time. I unlock the rear when I know I need to turn tightly. I've also experimented a bit, driving locked and unlocked, just to see what effect it will have on different lines...
shoulda kept the rubi![]()
Selectables are a game changer. My wheelin buddies mostly have spartans up front and LSD in the rear. It works pretty well, but there are those times....Yep it's part of why I went with ARB's instead of Detroit's when I was building my rig. I can remember when I got my first set of lockers I was driving a Samurai at the time. Man was I stoked but I'd been driving with open diffs for a LONG time prior.
They asked yesterday whether a TT or front locker was better for Moab. They’re plotting their next steps.
They also asked how much I cleared on the Rubi. They want to sell their bikes and stocks and buy a rig to fix up during the winter then flip. I told them the market is high right now and I’m afraid prices might come down in the next six months. It’s hard to find a good deal right now. The goal here is to flip a few and make enough to get another Jeep or car so they’re both set.
Which did you say? They asked yesterday whether a TT or front locker was better for Moab. They’re plotting their next steps.
What? You have an Nth TT? That’s crazy. Super nice. We could do that. Just need a rear shaft and SYEWhile I know it isn't ALUMINUM I have a Nth degree Tummy Tuck that they can have. It gets rid of that factory skid and it's drilled for both early and later TJ's.
