Building a diesel powered RHD TJ Wrangler (Picture Heavy)

Honestly if I was more of a V engine guy, I would have gone 4.8l LS in my build, I just really like my inline engines and the low end torque of the diesel. I might have still gone AW4 with the LS as well, it's a surprisingly strong transmission if you address some of it's flaws, specifically the...

How heavy do you think your LJ weighs? I've seen guys running these TDIs in full armored XJs and Toyotas that are over 5000lbs, the key is proper gearing, for the transmission and axles. If you can keep the RPMs in the correct range I would think you would be fine. These little motors are...

Building a diesel powered RHD TJ Wrangler (Picture Heavy)

So first off, with a simple tune and a better turbo, like the GTD1752 or even the GTD1756, in terms of accelerations, the BEW TDI is significantly faster than the 4.0l, even a manual 4.0l vs my automatic TDI. This 1.9l is deceptively quick, and the fuel economy is amazing as well. Also the BHW...

Building a diesel powered RHD TJ Wrangler (Picture Heavy)

Currently running 235/85r16 tires which is a 31.7 tall tire, though I'm considering going to a 33x10.5r15 at some point. My current gearing is 3.73. I have a set of Rubicon axles that would put my at 4.10 gears, but truthfully I could even go 5.13, which would shift my 55mph cruise from 3rd gear...

Building a diesel powered RHD TJ Wrangler (Picture Heavy)

Yeah that was my thought as well, if I had the correct gearing in my axles, I think my in-town would be closer to 25 ~ 27 mpg honestly. I know Jeep had a 2.5l VM Motori engine that they installed in international XJ Cherokees after the face lift in 1996, that would have been a FANTASTIC...

I used the sensors that came with the gauges. The only sensor I reused was the CRD Lift Pump fuel level sensor. I’ve documented it both in videos and this thread but I’d have to go looking for it, I believe it was in 2022.

Hey TJers, For the past several weeks I've been driving my TJ to test the fuel economy of my swap. I did two tests. The first test was a short highway speed test and the second test took the better part of a month driving only in town until I had gone through ¾ of a tank of diesel in my TJ...

Hey Rick, Thank you! I have been truthfully. I haven't done any wheeling with the TJ but for local runs around town it's been fantastic, even without AC figured out yet! Thanks Grant

Building a diesel powered RHD TJ Wrangler (Picture Heavy)

Hey TJers, Ever since I got my TJ Wrangler running with a TDI, I've had issues with the cooling system. It always seemed to fluctuate in ways that didn't make sense to me. In trying to figure out why my cooling system wasn't keeping my TDI engine cooled, I simplified my cooling loop and...

02 TJ ALH 1.9 TDI swap

Test the Fast Forward harness as soon as possible. I bought one, and it took me months of trouble shooting my swap to figure out that the reasons my swap wasn't starting was his harness, it was not pinned correctly. Ended up getting help from other people that ran into a similar issue. Also...

Building a diesel powered RHD TJ Wrangler (Picture Heavy)

Over the last two months with what little time I had, I swapped out the torque converter I had installed on my AW4 automatic in my TJ Wrangler. I had installed what was supposed to be a stock stall but a heavy-duty torque converter. Ever since I got my swap running I've had issues with it...

    Cummins R2.8 swap Alaska build

I like that intercooler setup 1000% more than what I did. I really need to get the equipment so I can weld aluminum . . . Great work and keep the updates coming!

Hey TJers, As with all swaps and builds, once you get some seat time on your project you start discovering problems or mistakes that were made during the build. In my case, I had some problems that went back years that I had solved by either replacing, rewiring, or even removing parts to get my...

    Engine swap ideas

I'm trying to find the article that talked about it, I swear I read that you could use either LS head so you could orientate the intake and exhaust where you needed it to go in your engine bay.

It would be great in a TJ honestly, especially since I believe you can pick the cylinder head you want to use, that would allow you to put the exhaust manifold on whichever side of the engine best worked for you.

    Engine swap ideas

As with anything in a swap, you need support, is there a standalone harness and ecu? Does anyone make an adapter? Are you going to swap over to a chevy transmission for it? All of these are possible but add a tremendous amount of time and cost. If I were to do my swap again in my Right Hand...

    Engine swap ideas

Mine was a factory turbo Kubota, not sure what it came out of, I bought it already pulled. I've never messed with the NA diesel Kubotas but I've been impressed with these Turbo Kubotas. I upgraded from the factory turbo to a Borg Warner K03 but I think for my next build if I use it, which now...

    Engine swap ideas

Actually I ran a Kubota V2403 with a K03 turbo in my TJ for a while before the laws where I was living were looking like they were going to change on me so I swapped to a TDI. I now live in NC and I've debating going back to the Kubota. It's not refined, it only revs to about 3000rpm and you...
