I never heard of using a heat gun on the door panels, I wouldn't expect good results there. It did work very well on my fender flares though.

About as often as I used my hair dryer on the flairs to get them black again. I finally decided I didn't mind them turning gray... just like my hair did many years ago lol.

My guess would be the clockspring too. It's not really a "clockspring" however, it's a coiled wiring harness inside an enclosure located behind the steering wheel that connects the horn, air bag, and cruise control from the steering wheel to the rest of the Jeep.

You mention 20 years of good results but you still have to reapply it several times a year or after heavy rains. Way too much trouble for me lol.

It could still have had trapped air in the cooling, check the coolant level in the radiator. Trapped air escaping can cause steam causing it to need more coolant to replace the air that escapes as the engine runs after installing a new radiator. Only add coolant to a cool engine, never right...

The root cause of those issues is the fan motor whose windings start shorting together. Replace both it and the resistor pack together to start. Closely examine the wiring too, the fan motor commonly gets it hot enough to melt the insulation.
