Really sad about my dog

I’m so sorry. My dogs are family and it sucks to lose them. My parents lost their dog and I convinced them to get another after they said they were done. Best medicine there is. Not saying now is the time to think about that.

Been down this path twice. Five years ago, the bill for back surgery was $5,200. This year, for another back surgery (same dog), it was $11,200. It's insane money, but what are you gonna do? They're family. Praying you and Molly get to see a lot more years together, my friend.

Sorry to hear. We lost 2 dogs last year both on the low end of their life expectancies 8 & 10. The younger of the two, a black lab, had 2 TPLO operations at about 3k a pop so I'm very familiar with unexpected vet bills.

Since there passing we adopted a husky mix.

I hope your pup gets better.

I feel your pain brother, we keep a high limit dedicated CC just for the pets. They're our children, we treat them as such.

I've owned lots of dogs over the years, and their passing is brutal. My avatar died last August, and it was the only time my wife and kids have seen me cry.

Sorry, I know how you feel.

I have a 1 year old golden and he's the best dog I've ever had. Seriously thinking about pet insurance for possible medical bills like this, since goldens are known for hip and joint issues.

We had quite a few Goldens when I was growing up. They literally all lived to be 10 years old before getting cancer, it's very common in the breed unfortunately. I now have a Border Collie who is 16 years old, and I have to carry him up and down stairs. It won't be long, and I'm dreading that day. I do think of pets as family, but when they have major health issues at an elderly age I do think there is a point where you can only do so much, and you just end up prolonging their suffering. It's great if surgeries, etc, help them live another year, but if that year is spent in pain it's not fair to them and we are only keeping them around for us.

Sorry to hear about your pup. I just went through an eye issue with my little girl and spent about $4,000 (and counting)to correct it. It is amazing what veterinarians can do to help. Never a second thought and worth it to have her healthy. Best wishes to you and yours.

Dude, I didn't want to even open the thread because I knew what it would contain. If you have it, spend whatever you have to. Our dogs are 2 of our 6 children and I will do anything for them. They've given us so much love and memories over the years that's the least we can do for them. Prayers for you and Molly. That last pic of all 3 is priceless.

This is very true! They are also always there for you. Like I stated above I dread the day when I come home and my buddy isn't waiting for me.

in 2007 my (first) wife and I had a 1 year old mini schnauzer get sick and die over a period of about 4 days with no explanation. It started 2 hours from home at my parents house with a sudden onset of nearly constant vomiting, like every 5 minutes, until her stomach was empty and was vomiting nothing but stomach acid. After a night in the vet ER we got her back with the vomiting stopped but instead with ataxia (loss of coordination) to where she could barely manage to wobble her way across a room to us. Got her home to our local vet where she got on fluids because she had lost so much to the vomiting, and then she started having seizures. Probably 3 or 4 vets ended up looking at her, and when no one could figure it out as she had to be on anti-seizure drugs 24 hours a day and continued to decline we decided to go to the vet hospital where she was and have her euthanized. She ended up going on her own about 30 minutes before we got there. They suspected some non-specific latent neurological issue but it was just a wild guess; offered to send her to the university for an autopsy to possibly find out what it was...at a cost of $2k with no guaranteed answers.

Even declining the autopsy, we had racked up close to $2000 in vet bills literally a week after closing on our first home where we had spent basically all of our cash. It ended up being the initial snowball to what became a difficult 5 year lesson on credit card debt. I told myself for a long time I would never spend that on a dog again unless I had some certainty of survival and quality of life, but my financial situation now is so much different than it was at 24 that the same rules don't really apply anymore.

We recently lost our 12 year old Golden to cancer. It has been gut wrenching around here. For the past three weeks I have found my wife in different parts of the house just crying her eyes out from finding a toy, or a tennis ball, and just no other reason. No way ready to replace him yet. Can’t bring myself to even bury his ashes yet.

We find it difficult to part with ours as well so we keep them near. That's the bookcase in the dining room.

As a retired K-9 officer, I will be the first to say that ALL of our animals are so much more than pets.
