My mechanic made me facepalm

In the lifetime of my Jeep, I’ve taken it to an actual shop maybe five times. I’ve proudly done most of the work myself but since I just don’t have the time these days, I dropped off the TJ at my locally owned neighborhood shop this morning to have the rear main seal and transmission seals replaced. There was also this awful noise coming from the top end. It mostly went away when warmed up. I’m thinking that it’s probably something in the valvetrain, or maybe since mine is a 2000 with 160k on the original 0331 head I mentally prepared myself for paying for installing a new one.

He asked me to open the hood while he went inside to get something, and comes back out with a can of WD-40 and sprays the belt. Boom. Noise is gone. It helps to bring it to a professional :p

Recently took mine to a shop to add a weld onto the trackbar bracket.
After moving it in, they take a quick look around and immediately hand me two bungee cords. Turns out I forgot to remove the bungees I used to hang my brake calipers with a few weeks back...

Just got a new belt in - Continental Elite Poly V Belt, which I understand is the new name for the Goodyear Gatorback. I’ve read good things so hopefully this will quiet the squeak down.
 
Just don't continue using WD-40 for jobs like that My can of WD-40 has to be 20 years old and it is barely used, there aren't many jobs where it's the right stuff. It's great at displacing moisture like in a wet ignition system and removing decal residue but it's not a good lubricant.

I think the mechanic just use the WD-40 to show that it wasn’t the valvetrain making the noise. He told me that since all of the pulleys seem to have some rust on them that could be causing the squeak. I put on the continental poly-v belt on just a few minutes ago and it’s quiet as ever!
