Questions about audio upgrades for my 98 TJ

What do you seal it with and how does it help?
I sealed the mounting surfaces with sound deadening material. The reason why it is important is a speaker works by keeping the front and rear sound waves from interacting with each other. That's why all home speakers are in an enclosure, or car speakers are in a door, dash or rear deck.

The factory TJ dash location is full of open areas around the mounting surface, that's the main reason dash speakers don't have any bass. Seal that mounting surface up, and you'll have dramatically better bass. Don't bother doing anything behind the speakers. I have a post here somewhere with video proving that sealing the mounting surface makes a big difference. I played one side that was sealed, and the other side that wasn't yet. The bass response is very different between the two.

I don't understand how you sealed it? In my TJ there's like a giant pocket. So I would guess there would be a need to make a box out of sound deadener? Can you post more pictures of the inside of your dash? Also, I think I asked before but I will ask again, those speakers in that adaptor, are they 6.5"s?

Could you get a picture of the inside of your dash? Did you make a box around the speaker adaptor made out of sound deadener? I'm just a bit confused, sorry. Also, those really don't look like 5.25" are they 6.5? I could be wrong, I am just asking. Also if they are indeed 6.5's where did you get the adaptor?

Those are 5.25". They may look bigger because they are just a woofer, and not a conventional coaxial car speaker. The back is left open, only the front mounting surface is sealed. Sealing the back would cause weak bass because there isn't enough room back there to make an enclosure of the correct size. The stock mounting surface is full of gaps and holes which is why the dash speakers always sound tinny and weak. Sealing those gaps and holes makes a big difference in bass response.

First thing is go to walmart in the sewing section buy some poly fill (stuffing) and pack that in the sound bar and behind the front speakers. Take the panel off the fronts and just pack the polly fill behind it. It will make a night and day difference!

Get a powered sub the 12" rockford fosgate in the truck box is amazing! But any powered sub will help. A truck style box will have the sub mounted on the slanted side so it fits behind the back seat perfectly.

Did it fit in the trunk box? Or just behind the seat with no trunk?
