I have two specific questions:
1. Does the accumulator need to be mounted lower that the point at which it enters the firewall on an 05?

I was trying to reroute the line between the firewall and the evaporator. At the evaporator the line broke and this little alien pooped it head out of the line!!!! It looks like a filter but I am no HVAC expert, or hell for that matter I know very little about this system. Anyone know what this thing is and what it does and do I need it?

That is your metering device, like an orifice that meters the refrigerant flow. It take the place of the expansion valve.

Oh, and yes you need it, but it looks like you cooked the O rings.

The accumulator should be mounted at the level it was located at because it gathers the oil at a low point, and as the oil level builds up in the cylinder the velocity of the refrigerant flow increases and carries the oil back to the compressor.
