Viair 400H Onboard Air Compressor Install (Lots of Photos)

You can cram one flat on the ABS tray too if you want. I wonder if the vertical mount would interfere with the clutch fluid reservoir since this is an automatic

I had a Viair 450 with a 2.5 gallon tank on my F350 but for the TJ I went with ARB. I also just put an ARB on my new Ranger. Both are singles but my biggest tires are 31". I hope the ARBs are at least as good as the Viair in terms of quality and longevity. I don't have a problem with the duty cycle as I can air up all 4 in under 30 min. What do you guys think of Viair vs ARB?

I took advantage of the open space on the driver side fender well since I don't have cruise and no emissions. Started with a crude foam core and cardboard mockup, then created CAD data and sent it to "send-cut-send" to have it made. I knew I would have to finish bend the 3 mounting tabs so I just had them bent close to where they needed to be and did the finish work during the final trial fits. For the non-tab corner attachment, I used one of the existing holes in the fender well with a small spacer so the plate isn't touching the fender well anywhere other than at the fastener joints. I then ran the wire harness (orange line) next to the big bundle across the firewall and connected directly to the battery.

The fender isn't flat so is the heavy end of your compressor just suspended in the air?

"Suspended in the air" is inaccurate. So is your characterization of which is the "heavy end" of the compressor. The end with the motor is actually the heavy end, not the end with the aluminum cylinder and piston.

The mounting plate does extend a couple of inches rearward of the fender surface, but is bolted to the fender in three locations using existing factory holes, with two of the compressor's feet utilizing the same bolts securing the mounting plate. The other two feet (most rearward) are bolted to the mounting plate alone, which is thick enough not to flex. (6mm thick scrap steel plate if I recall correctly.)

The short unsupported overhang of the mounting plate has not been a problem since the compressor was installed in 2018.
