IH used their engine in trucks. They used those on tractors, etc - but did they use them on trucks? I could see the IH gas over diesel setup on a truck, but Cat's pony motor wouldn't be conVEEEENient enough I'm sure.![]()

Old Cat engines had a small gas engine that was used to start the diesel so it had spark plugs. IH had a duel fuel engine that would start on gas and then switch to diesel.
Old Deeres had a pony motor, too.
Also Cat had a spark plug on their first generation DPF engine
Mack trucks had a coil and spark plug in the DOC.

Got to ignite the DPF to "clean" it some how. Our governments greatest idea to "clean" diesel emissions. That's why Cat got out of the road engine business.
Any stationary engine (fire pump or generator for example) is exempt as well as military. All diesel trucks, even from Ford, GM, or Ram the military buys comes factory deleted. Then the Government forced them back into the clean engine.
Now any diesel under 35hp and over 1000hp are exempt stupid EPA

Diesel Oxidation CatalystNo wonder why Cat got out of the truck game! They thought spark plugs were the answer to their emissions problems???
Whats the DOC on a Mack?

Because the emissions systems aren't reliable. The military won't have it if there's a chance it will cause issues on the battlefield.Things that make you go Hmmmm it's good for the peasants but not the over lords....
Kinda like International did with their MaxForce engines. It almost buried them.It was early in the game. They added a diesel injector and plug right after the turbo that was nothing but trouble when controlled exhaust burn and temps.
I think it was a 2008 regulation and they bailed in 2010.

Do as I say, not as I do.Convenient how the gov doesn't have to obey their own lawswhat a bunch of crooks

Just goes to show that the emissions aren't as good for engines as they make them out to be.
My brother deleted his 2022 L5P and gained 2.5 MPG pulling 37k pounds GCWR. He went from 6 to 8.5 MPG.Especially with the diesels, I don't get their claim that DEF is beneficial.
Beneficial to WHO?
It cuts fuel mileage and power in half!?
And dont even get me started on reliability, down time and cost of repairs...

I don't doubt that. My 09 Dodge 3500 gets 20+ empty. I've never checked it loaded.
It didn't come with a DEF system but it did have the DPF. Also, it's more than just deleted, but I mean the technology is there if they'd let them run.
