Utqiagvik Has Fallen Into Polar Night
The northernmost town in America has now stepped into its long stretch of total darkness. In Utqiagvik, Alaska, the sun has set for the final time this year — and it won’t return until January 22, 2026.
For weeks, the town will live under a deep blue twilight, guided only by streetlights, snow glow, and the silent Arctic sky. Life continues — but in a world where daylight simply doesn’t exist.
Lived here for 2 years as a kid. From the air flying in one summer.

My summer setup, had a frame with a sled mounted to it and I had the Joe Reddington Jr who'd ran the Iditarod that year and had come to speak to the school so I got to pick him up at the airport. Like having a NFL star...
