I have an 01 sport with the dana 44 rear LSD, and 3.73 gears if that is somehow important to know. i’m going to be doing my 60k service and that means gear oil time! oh my poor poor nose😅 i am curious how much fluid i should purchase ahead of time for the job? obviously i don't want to have to order more, but id also prefer not to be left with so much that i feel obligated to let it collect dust in my shop. thanks:)

Get the gallon. It'll be plenty for both of your diffs and you'll have more leftover for next time. The diff service is recommended every 12K miles so depending on how much you drive it'll come in handy sooner then later. Get your self one of those pumps with hose to fill them up too, makes it so much easier. I use this one.

I have one of those big jugs and I have to keep around the smaller containers so you can squeeze em to get the fluid in without messing with a pump or trying to get a hose from above

12k?! i thought diff service was 60k

The 12K mi interval is Schedule B, with this qualifier:
‡Off-highway operation, trailer towing, taxi, limousine,
bus, snow plowing, or other types of commercial
service or prolonged operation with heavy loading,
especially in hot weather, require front and rear axle
service indicated with a ‡ in Schedule “B”. Perform
these services if the vehicle is usually operated under
these conditions

Under Schedule A, they never even have you check the axle fluid, much less change it.

It has never made any sense.

I have nearly 300k mi on my YJ's 30 and 35, and around 290K mi on my TJ Rubicon's 44s. I can assure you I didn't change the gear oil every 12K. I use synthetic, and at 30K or more, what comes out looks just like the new going in.

This does not apply if you regularly submerge your axles.

Yeah, I also find it weird that’s there’s no mention of the axles in the schedule A.

Definitely if you’re submerging the axles or in my case when I got my TJ, there was no vent tube or fitting on the front axle. I drained, clean and refilled both and the front definitely needed it from water and dirt getting in just through that little fitting hole up top. The rear was significantly cleaner. I still would’ve done both regardless because I like to do all the fluids when I purchase any used vehicle for piece of mind.
