Transmission sensor?

1999 Tj Sahara with 2.5L and 5 speed manual
So lately the jeep has been acting as if it has a misfire, but every time I try to run a code and never gives me anything and the check engine light does not stay on. I gave it a tune-up and that seemed to help it but then it started coming back. I started fiddling with wires and I found some on the left side of the engine that were taped together. When I would wiggle these buyers the RPMs would start acting up.

So I followed the set of wires down and they come to a sensor on the top front of the transmission. I was wondering if anyone knew what the sensor was because I might need to do some cutting so I can repair the wires on the permanent side of that sensor clip.

Two of the pictures are of with a sensor meets the transmission, the other picture is the area where it clips into the rest of the harness. As you can see the previous owner taped up the wires and I haven't taken it off yet but I'm assuming it's not looking good under there.

That's your crank shaft position sensor. It really doesn't have anything to do with the transmission, it just marks the location of the flywheel (and thus, the crankshaft) for the computer.

Could a bad signal from there cause stuttering?

Got them swapped, and it seems like it's fixed it!

You might want to start thinking about delooming most of your engine harness and physically inspecting all your wires.

So, im wondering if I should replace the whole sensor now?
After hitting a pothole or 2 the Jeep has been acting how it did before I replaced those wires. It'll start rough, then run rough, its SUPER easy to stall in reverse and even a couple times, at low speeds it would die and then not want to start back up. Could these be symptoms of the CPS being bad and not just those wires? it also drives kinda sluggish. I know its a 2.5L, But it doesn't always feel like it wants to open up. Other times it will. Ill start checking more wire connections here soon. Thanks

yea, since the symptoms I'm getting are the same as when the wires leading to the CPS were bad, im assuming I should just replace the CPS as well
