Dana 44 re-gear and locker install

I hate to say this but my Yukon kit came with a lot of shims. Junk R&P, but...

Yeah take your time. Mine sat in my garage for close to 3 months. It was worth it

Im trying to be patient, I really am. But my Jeep has been down since early spring while I tried to find time to tackle this.

Being this close is making me antsy!🤣🤣🤣

I keep telling myself "dont rush this. Take your time and do it right!:

Take out 5 then and let's see. I'm not really feeling good about the other patterns. If you already ran one that was 5 shallower, then I'd opt to get more shims.

Yeah, the last pattern i ran was .065, and the 2nd pattern i ran was .060.

Shims ordered from Yukon! They'll be here Tuesday it says, which happens to be my last day of work this week, so next pattern will be posted Wednesday afternoon!

Thanks again for all the help.

Your compound is really runny and pooling at the base of the teeth. it is impossible to see what the bottom of the pattern is doing. Can you q tip it out of the bottom when you run these?

I was going to say the same thing. The whole add a little gear oil has people going overboard with it.

Alright, new shims came in, here's patter #6!

Pinion: .063 (and a half)
Driver: .185
Passenger: .115
B/L: .009

I tried to get the gear pattern compound less runny this time. I can try again if it is still too runny.

Yukon shim pack had didnt have a lot of variety either, but i was able to get this stack.

Your coast side looks good but your drive side looks shallow. Since this is a low pinion rear axle, you want to focus on the drive side. You are only 1-2 thou shallow.

I think you might be there. Do this- clean off all the gear marking compound. If you have more of it, don't think it out. Put only enough on to turn the teeth yellow. No goops. Paint a different part of the ring gear. Hold tight pressure when rotating it. You have a lot of build up on the root currently.

Sorry it took me a bit, I wanted to get back to look at it on my bigger screen.

This ring gear is giving me a headache. Your coast side looks decent while your drive side looks slightly deep now. If it were me, I would go back to the previous pattern and run that (Post #68). Your drive side in this latest post looks deep whereas post #68 isn't bad. The coast side will then look a little shallow. Some people prefer to run it deep versus shallow, and while I agree, I would do what your drive side is telling you. You drive side looks good in post #68. Go with that.

Awesome!

Im happy to have it dialed in (at least reasonably so)! Tomorrow is the only day me and the wife have off together, but Friday, ill finish it up and try to get this axle back under the jeep!

Thanks so much for your help, @hosejockey61 ! I really appreciate all the interpretation!

To wrap this up, I went back to the setup in post #68 per @hosejockey61 suggestion. Everything is in spec, torqued and loctite'd per spec, and final install happened this afternoon. Locker works as it should with an air compressor blowing into the line orifice, so everything should be good! And just in time for hunting season!🤣

I'll get the axle back under the jeep, and start running air lines. Once that is wrapped up, I should just have to break in the gears.

Thanks a million for everyone's input, but the biggest thanks goes to the guy with the Big F**kin' Hammer!

If we ever meet up, man, dinner's on me!
