A time to break down, and a time to build (the LJ) up

I reused the OEM cam sensor as recommended on the OPDA thread in Resources. It idled well but I’ll take it out tomorrow to see if I get any codes.

I want to see it with the khaki top. 👍🏼

It took over a year but I finally got the dark khaki soft uppers to match the soft top, so here’s that photo you requested:

After a bit more looking, it seems I’m dealing with the fact that Jeep redesigned the LJ Sunrider feature halfway through 2005. While my old windows are Rugged Ridge, the frame itself is almost certainly Factory, are are the surrounds. The door surrounds are the later design; the frame that came with the khaki top is the older design.

For now I’m going to leave the brackets/pins disconnected. It seems they’re only needed for the sunrider configuration, which I tried a few times and didn’t particularly like.

I resolved this issue by transferring the ‘05 khaki top fabric to my original ‘06 soft top frame.

I had an auto upholstery shop put a new zipper on the rear window, and got soft uppers to match, so I think I’m done with the exterior color scheme.

Can't believe its been over a year since the last post. Time flies when you buy a '95 YJ!

I haven't had to do much to the LJ in the past year. It sits a lot in a garage waiting for vacation time in the mountains. It's gone over every trail I've asked it to, and no mechanical problems. I did just get a P1033 code which turned out to be loose bolts so the precats weren't secure to the manifold. The code cleared itself, and the engine sounds better now without an exhaust leak.

My clutch is getting on to the end of its life, and the NSG370 is starting to have some of the reverse issues. I'll have to decide whether to do a clutch on the NSG, or just swap to a new AX-15... advice appreciated.

As I said, in the past two summers, the LJ has handled every trail I’ve tried, and I’ve been very happy with the build.

However, I think in the next year or so, I will want to add a few more things to make it even better, things that were on the ‘maybe someday ‘ list.

It's always been undergeared at 3.77, so go to 4.56 or 4.88 and get lockers, partial tummy tuck, maybe engine skid as well.

The idea would be to make it as capable as possible on 33’s. I really appreciate the simplicity of stock control arms and driveshafts.

My wife and kids have really enjoyed the mountain trails, so we may be adding a JLU someday to accommodate more people.

I think @JMT did the ax15 swap?

@TRevs My R was going out in my NSG (‘05). It was getting to be a real pain. I swapped an auto in. It should be easier to do the AX-15. AA has an adapter for the bellhousing. It’s kinda spendy, but at least they still make brand new AX-15’s. I doubt the NSG will be supported in a few years. Either that or someone is going to start rebuilding them and make a crap ton of money. Not many reliable rebuilders right now. Do you really think the R issue is just a clutch issue?

Nice looking rig

Sorry, I figured it was you or @freedom_in_4low .for some reason I thought the 42rle was your second swap.

I think the clutch and R problems are separate. The friction point on the pedal is getting pretty far out, and it slips a bit before stalling if I try to stall in 2nd or 4th. Otherwise shifting into all forward gears is normal.

But in the past year I’ve noticed it’s harder to get the shifter into Reverse; i have to be very deliberate to push it rightward beyond the 5-6 gate and use more force. Once in gear, it usually is fine but 2-3 times as I let out the clutch it has either ground gears, popped out into neutral, or make a loud clunk.

Your explanation of R sounds just like mine did. I wish you the best!

I think i can put off any transmission repairs for awhile, but after reviewing @freedom_in_4low thread on the swap I may need to fly him down to San Antonio for a working vacation!

I've worked in worse places haha. At least do it when it's not 100 and humid though. I did mine in June and it was rough lol.

Not much happening with the LJ this summer so far, just a couple short moderate trail days (e.g. slaughterhouse), but we’ve got two days next week in the San Juans. To fit all the relatives we’re renting three JLUR out of Montrose so we’ll have our own 4 Jeep convoy.

I did get the winch on this summer

but don’t even really know how to use it. I’ll cross that bridge when I get there I guess.

We started noticing the blast furnace coming from the transmission tunnel a few months ago. I knew the lower boot was already torn, but when I checked again it was basically gone.

I got the replacement Mustang boot in other threads and glued it in. Got everything reassembled today and it looks good going through all the gears.

Looking forward to testing it out on the road.

Just finished a round trip over the continental divide with two days of san juan trails and the shift boot is holding up well. So nice not to have the blast furnace.

I noticed a few minor issues on the trip: the post on the axle for my jks disconnect was loose, so I got that torqued down. There’s an oil seep at the rear of the oil pan; I might finally be confronted by the RMS, or it could be the oil pan gasket which I changed a few years ago.

Also, my left headlamp is loose and it appears one of the adjusting screws won’t stay in its plastic bracket.

I’m thinking I can hold it on by gluing a washer on the rear of the plastic frame; I’ll have to search for relevant threads. A new assembly is available for $120. I’ll try the 12¢ washer first.

Got a $3.50 pack of fender washer in stainless and glued them in to retain the adjustment screws.

We’ll see if it lasts.
