I’m re- ringing this engine, bought new Hastings rings. Oil ring doesn’t fit. The rings I bought according to summit racing’s website will fit most 2.5l from 94-02. The jeep is a 97 however the engine is toast. This engine was given to me, for the most part the engine is very good candidate , I just figured new rings, and bearings wouldn’t hurt. Yes I did hone the cylinders. I may have the incorrect rings, but the box part number is correct.

I have read quite a few posts on identifying numbers but I find it confusingas my numbers don’t look like most that I have seen in posts.

I thought the old school AMC/Chrysler Jeep blocks didn't have date info? I thought you just have to go by the little changes made over the years to things like bolt hole locations.

The V at the start of the last eight digits of the VIN shown in the first pic means that engine was originally fitted to a 97 model year TJ.
There should be a build date code on the block that will give the actual production date.

The last six digits are around 50k lower that the last six on my 97 4.0L which has an engine built 30 Dec 96, so I'd assume that engine was built earlier in 96.
