1988 Jeep Comanche “Somebody stop me”

The wiring. Look hard at the fuse box and make sure all the lights work. My son got one and it’s a fine truck now but we spent weeks unfucking all the fuse related issues. The clutch master cylinder leaked at some point and melted the fuse box and has created a real mess there.Yours is much prettier I will say

Front doors forward is all XJ. Wiring can be an issue: parking lights, blinkers/turns in the fender do a ground thing to blink and can be finicky. The early Renix computer was basic and reliable but would flake out with heat and it would have to cool off. A borla header wakes them up. I had an 87 Shortbed Manual I should have never sold but needed something bigger. Then had an 89 Longbed "1 Ton" for awhile that looked nicer but was a wiring nightmare. Beware of the Peugot BA10 manual tranny.

Big thanks to all. I think this weekend. Will be on the lookout for wiring

I have a 1988 Eliminator and it's been trouble free for the 10 yrs. or so that I've owned it ... nothing more than the usual maintenance and service items. Regarding the electrics, take a look at the C101 connector which is on the driver's side firewall. If all is good, you won't be able to see much as it's sealed. If it's been "fixed" it might be a bit of a wiring mess. There are about 23 wires that connect inside a fairly small box and disconnects can occur. It was eliminated soon after the 1988s (my 1989 XJ doesn't have one) and you can do it yourself with a bit of work.

Also, look at the relay centre on the passenger's side inner fender under the hood. There is nothing that's overly complicated but some jerry rigging may have taken place over time. Hopefully it still has the plastic cover over it and especially the 2 small plastic fasteners which are almost impossible to find used.

The RENIX models are pre OBII so you're kind of on your own for trouble shooting. You'll need a multi metre or a diagnostic scanner like a Snap-on MT2500. There is a guy, Nick Risley (sp?), who makes an onboard scanner that is very helpful and reasonably priced.

Cruiser54 has some great tips on the RENIX models. If you can get an on line copy of his book it will be very worthwhile. Unfortunately Pete passed away a while back and I'm not sure what is available.

Good luck!
