Correct Tire Pressure

Do you use a digital tyre inflator at home? Can you recommend a good one?
I strictly use a big round analog low pressure tire gauges like this one. The big scale that only goes up to 30 psi gives a more accurate pressure indication for the lower tire pressures normally used in a TJ.
This isn't exactly like mine but it's close enough...

Not everyone has the knowledge or common sense to be able to do the chalk test correctly. Many believe the chalk is supposed to be worn off evenly across the entire tread which is not true. Setting the air pressure to do that will result in a severely underinflated tire. The chalk should not be worn away from the edges of the tread during the chalk test, the tread's edge only comes in contact with the road surface under hard cornering.

Well than I guess I lack both knowledge and common sense. This method has always worked for me, but admittedly I am a sample of 1.

Re-read what I said, I never said you were lacking in it. Few people however know enough to know when a pressure is appropriate or not from the chalk method.

Nope.. We make two. That's exactly how I have been doing it for the past four Wranglers. Never had any issue with uneven wear and always have a comfortable and controllable ride.

That’s a metric equivalent of a 32,7x11.2, so proper pressure is 26psi. If you are fully loaded with passengers and gear 28psi.

You may want to hook up with @UKTJ if you can. He’s a very knowledgeable member in your neck of the woods.

Very kind of you to say so, but probably a bit too kind as I am always on here looking for the benefit of the experience of yourself and others :)

Yes the tyre says the load rating is E

yes sorry I meant around 30cm not inches 😂 just got the tape measure out and they are 10 inches.

Hi @Beardy, did you measure the tyre width or the wheel itself? I run a 285 / 75 / 16 tyre so very similar to yours at 32.8" x 11.2", but the wheel they are mounted on is 7" wide. For that size of tyre most manufacturers would recommend a wheel no wider than 9", maybe 9.5" for some at the absolute max - hence the recommendation not to deflate too much when offroad.

Are you looking for an inflator or just a gauge. A lot of people on here will have a compressor fitted (or CO2 tanks) on their TJ, so will only focus on the gauge. If you are actually looking for something to actual inflate the tyres then the issue is that many of the ones that are around in the UK that plug into the cigarette lighter are only designed to be used very occassionally on road tyres with a relatively small volume. If you want this for regular airing down for offroading one of those will have two issues: it will take a very long time to reinflate your tyres; and, I doubt it will last that long as it is not designed to run for that long of a time in one go.

For example, this one, puts out 35l per minute, after 10-15 minutes of use you need to let it cool down for the same amount of time. Depending on what you run on road and air down to, at 35l per minute you may not get all four tyres up to road pressure before needing to let it cool.

I think what you need if it is to use regularly when airing down is either something like this or if your budget permits this. I know somebody that uses one of these on 37" tyres and it does the job very well.

Hope that helps.

The Milton traditional agrees with my digital Etenwolf within +-1lb psi.

Very useful information so thank you mate. I’ve taken a note of those compressors. Just wanted something reliable that I could inflate/deflate my tyres when needed. I have inflated my tyres to 26psi and it now drives lovely on the road. They were sat at 16psi so no wonder it drove like a boat! 😂
