Novak Conversions Jeep Wrangler TJ engine mounts

What did you do to your TJ today?

Wow! That's a lot of discretion to give someone for a government inspection (sharp edges????). That sucks.

and I thought CA was bad, we don’t have anything like that, just the dumb semi-annual smog check. I think you should remove your post before some here in CA reads it and gets a crazy idea 😂😂

That's how it was for yearly mechanical inspections when/where I lived in PA (prior to 2012). Sharp rusty edges and holes would pretty much guarantee a fail.

Turned a perfect ten on my odometer. Didn't take a pic of it running because it has a full tank and the CEL isn't on, no one would have believed me.

I did the Day 1 break in period yesterday (2 cycles of 5-7 stops) and literally just got back from the Day 2 break in (1 cycle of 5-7 stops). With both days, I definitely heated up the brakes up enough because I was smelling the brakes, and saw a bit of dust/smoke coming from them as well (I did these cycles at 4am so the street lights were great for showing any kind of dust).

I actually need to flush out the entire brake system. I may end up doing that today after it has been sitting for 8 hours or so.

Same approach should apply if you drain it and replace. Bleed to clean fluid at each corner. Run the Jeep around. Then let it sit overnight and bleed again. Gets any final bubbles out.

Glad you're feeling a better stop w/ the BMB. I'm looking forward to a real 'break check' on mine once I get the suspension dialed in. They do stop 35s without a thought on my tests drives to date.

I know the guy; he’s good people. I think he just doesn’t want cops seeing a new sticker on a vehicle that looks like this (tires sticking out, rust/holes, no side markers, etc) and it coming back to him. At least he didn’t charge me or fail me!

Must be something about that area on the fenders with Khaki TJ's (passenger side on mine):

Rust found:

My crappy (best effort - but I hate body work) repair attempt - damage way bigger than expected/repaired:

Yeah my fenders have clearly been repainted before. And the rust bubbled through pretty fast. I like the idea of aluminum but also like the OEM look. I might try aftermarket OEM copies like the Crown ones and just treat the crap out of them.

My driver was also rusting where the brace under the fender met the fender.

I also didn't clear enough of the cancer. It was really way too gone.

It was my second time on body work on a vehicle and I really do hate it... I convinced the wife at this point that the fenders were too far gone...

Cancer also around the hood area of the fender I tried to repair.

Better bodyworkers than I could have saved these fenders. I like the OEM look but aluminum flats got my attention. (I hate bodywork...)

Crown or finding really good OEM is a best option if you want OEM look.

Where in the state do they require a " semi-annual smog check ? " do you mean every other year and not semi-annual (twice in one year) smog check

Only a single day? That's impressive. I need to do this to mine since I know it is bad. Which guide/video did you use?

Mostly YouTube, and I didn't pull the steering column, so that helped. I worked from 10 to 8, only taking breaks for lunch and supper.

Got the battery put back in today, but only left it out yesterday because I painted the battery tray and the area under it where some surface rust was.

I still have to replace the fan motor resistor because it was super rusty from leaves being packed around it.

So that's the burning smell I smelled at times? 😳

In Virginia, no floorboard holes larger than a quarter, state police oversee the list of what must be checked, and what fails.

Here in Ohio you could pedal the car like Fred Flintstone and get away with it. 😉

Dunno if those switch blanks are the same from older to newer TJ's, but I've been working on this aux jack 3D print for another Jeep brother's later model TJ switch panel...

Printed in ABS, in the second photo the part has been sanded to 400 grit in prep for flat black paint and a little white lacquer-stik infill on the letters.

Busy day for me, I’m just reading this now those look great. Much better than my temp. hack job of fabric tape over welded plastic. Are yours for sale?

As I read further I see your ethos on not entering the retail market, a good justification. My current plan is to go hands on with some aluminium plate and a dremel tool for some switchology. However if you ever were to accept unconditional ‘grant monies’ for product development and independent peer review. Let me know.

I suspect anything I design for 3D printing will be made available for download, good for folks with printers, and likely free of charge (reduced liability in my mind ;) ).

You're actually not far with the R&D thing, though. I'm not new to CAD but I am to 3D printing, I used the aux input blank project to gain more knowledge on the materials and the particulars of printing with them as well as how the prints machine and take finishes. It's a small enough part so the prints don't take long and use less material, I don't feel as bad if I jack something up...

Was gonna ask the same thing...

That's some grade-A bullsh right there.

Welcome to the "not Texas" portion of the country. I agree with you 100%, but this is nothing new and the norm for many of us.

The PRoMD is a strange one, emissions are tested every two years (and tied to your reg, no pass no reg), but only one mechanical inspection when the vehicle is transferred. Pretty sure they're the same about rusty holes here as in PA and the tread of your tires must be completely covered. I spent a bit of coin just trying to get wheels, tires and flares in order a few months ago so as to get my LJ to pass the mechanical/safety inspection. :cautious:

Any particular video you used? Can you link them? There's lots of videos of varying quality/indepthness out there.

Also, do you have AC on your Jeep? If so, how did you manage the evac of the AC lines?

That first drive after I put on the new pads was a bit sketchy. The BMB pads would stop, but very slow. Now they definitely have a ton of bite to them.
