What crazy Chrysler engineer thought it was a good idea to secure fender flares with Lego blocks?

I converted mine to nutserts and have had my flares on and off several times:

If it's not a blind hole, I prefer not to use nutserts.

As for the factory, I imagine the plastic blocks provide preload on the sheet metal screw threads which probably saves some money over having to use bolts with threadlocker.

They actually could very well have been more expensive and and I can't imagine them being quicker to install since you have to hold the block while you thread the screw into it.

Having had a 99 with nutserts and an 06 with the plastic blocks, I'm not sure I don't prefer the plastic. They're not much fun on your fingers but I've never had to grind one off or drill one out.

Unless you meant you added the nutserts, all the TJ's came with the same mix of nutserts for the blind holes and plastic nuts for the accessible ones. I don't ever use nutserts for flares. Offends me greatly for some reason.

I didn't add any. I just don't have any recollection of using plastic blocks when I pulled the flares on my 99, but I vividly remember having to hold several nutserts from the backside with vice grips while I drilled the flanges off of them. Maybe it had already been done before I owned it.
