$2400 and the Alabama High Step for a re-gear?

on conversation

This is an important place to delineate- doctors, financial experts, lawyers- They need to see peoples faces, reactions and body language.

Also a lot of what I’m talking about it’s just a screening process to lead me to doing that with the right people that live in the right area that are wanting to do the kind of work I do.

This is all good stuff.

I think one thing that could be pointed out is the difference in a person that works with the intangible versus working with a business that does technical work-

Sadly, what happens a lot of the time is the business that does technical work is just horrible with the phone and calling people back,etc- They end up hating the phone because it’s an impediment to getting things done.

At the same time they’ll be quick to pick it up when they need business.

I think more than anything I’m trying to express “Have a protocol”. Something.

In any event, The one guy who insisted he only be contacted by email, hasn’t responded… yet.

Expectations are pre-meditated disappointment. Shame on me for having any.

Well this leads me to something that just happened a few minutes ago.

I was contacted by telephone and could not answer the phone so the person texted and within five minutes I was able to respond

They told me the nature of what they wanted and where they lived in it was out of our service area-

I was able to thank the person that referred us through them and refer them to someone very capable in their area- often I even warm up the new party for them by contacting them for them.

This thing where businesses create an environment that clients can’t get answers and certainly a warm fuzzy feeling of working with them is either stupidity or arrogance-

Business owners need to get in the game and I have a way that people can communicate and do it more timely than their competition- Even if they don’t want to work the increased opportunities give them choices of work that is more profitable than others- Or like us a list of people that will wait one or two years.

Failure in business is brutal and it just grieves me that companies hours so terrible at marketing themselves-

I did a lot of sales work when I was young- I’m very thankful for that. All you have to do to sell something is take the risk out of the transaction and remember generally people always do what is in their best interest.

The shop I emailed for the quote got back to me a few minutes after my last post above.

A few hundred less. Though the email was pretty detailed I still had questions and would have preferred a more personal exchange, but they didn’t say anything that left me scratching my head or running for the hills. Frankly, it was a well thought out personal email, not a copy paste, and was very much confidence inspiring.

What they are doing is a painless way of screening -

“This is what it cost”. This weeds out hopeful kids working at Target and tightwads-

I’d print it and schedule a quick visit with questions to ask- or respond that you are interested and ask if they will call - and even outline the questions in the email so they have time to think about them too.

Remember they are also likely gauging how you will be to work for - too many gyrations or showing too much distrust turn off a seasoned business person because it displays a difficult personality type - same you see in your business I bet.

Just giving you a perspective- good luck, you will LOVE proper gears.

All said with the best of intentions-

I asked what else I should consider doing while I was 'in there'... He went on about replacing the shafts but never mentioned lockers.. I was clear that I didn't have lockers.

I started to go down that route with the guy and figured I'd save myself the time. I just left. I might go back if I need some valve stem caps or something.. but they aren't touching my jeep

Yes Sir.

Birmingham? The drive home would take care of the needed break-in miles. I need someplace a wee bit closer.

Yeah. I had my awful 3.07 gears replaced with 4.56 gears & they are great with my 33”/12.50R15 tires. Not noisy or anything. As long as they are in there changing out the differential gears you can save a lot of money in labor charges by getting the upgrades you want at the same time. In my case, I got chromoly axle shafts, True Track limited slip different & also some new front hubs since they were only $89.00 each.
New gears do need about 500 break-in miles. Keep speeds down around 50 mph or so. You don’t need to engage the 4WD. The front differential will turn & break in as you are driving anyway. Drive for a few miles & stop long enough for everything to cool down & then drive some more. The heat cycles are what is needed. After 500 miles you need to change out the differential oil & then you’re good to go.
Good luck with all this.

Do not ignore the break in process, 500 miles doing about 40 to 50 miles at a time and letting it cool down between cycles. And yes, I do break in rifle barrels as well! I have found value in each.

This was my direction from the shop yesterday. 500 miles at no faster than 45mph, and no longer than 30 minutes at a time.

Boy is that slow, even in a TJ. 😂

Good to read this. My 05 X 6-speed will be out of the shop next week w 4.56 gears (from 3.07), a Tru Track in the rear (Dana 35), and an E-locker up front. 32” tires on Moab wheels for now. Not a DD.

One potential regear guy told me I wouldn’t be able to go over 50. But it’s only 200 rpm difference at 70 mph over a factory Rubi on 245 75R16’s. Experts!

I will probably go to 33’s at some point in the near future. The lift is already there
