Got a transmission leak. Found it coming from the top of transmission and tower plate. I haven’t pulled it apart yet. Like to have parts in hand before starting the job. I seen a post from 2 years ago saying he had two gaskets and a metal plate in between tower and transmission. Was wondering if anyone can give me some part numbers or some info. Does it take one gasket or does it take two gaskets and metal plate? Illustrated parts catalog with pictures and part numbers would be great. Thanks

I didn't replace the gasket you are referring to on mine, however, be aware there are some other parts you should change while in there since you're going to have it apart anyway. The shifter cradle (?) in mine was in many pieces but still in place. Be VERY careful when you remove the shifter as to not knock any of those pieces down into the transmission. Also, the boot as shown in the video will be likely torn. This is direct access for dirt and water to get inside.

This video is cued up to when I was talking about those items.

There is a downloadable Parts Catalog PDF on the Forum in the TJ Resources section for your year TJ.
There are exploded pictures identifying the parts and their numbers.

Thank You, that IPC is exactly what I was looking for. If any of you all have done this job before. Is item# 33 the tranny shield plate the only thing in between tower and tranny. No gasket or RTV? Looks like I have a gasket in between mine. I can see a tab sticking out the aft side

Thanks for the info. I do have all new boots and seal coming. Just wasn’t sure what to use between tower and tranny. This is where I have found a leak. Looks like a gasket maybe in there. As I can see the tab sticking out the aft side. Can you tell me what you had in between your tower and tranny? The IPC item #33 only calls for steal plate. Did you re-seal it with RTV

From the factory it is a metal plate with gaskets on both sides. I got one from omix or crown that works the same as stock.

The diagram does not depict it well, but there are gaskets in both sides. Just get the crown/omix part. Mopar has long been discontinued. RTV will make a mess, I would not use that.

Ok, I wanted to post a up date for the next guy. With pictures as you can’t find any video on how to replace the gaskets on ax15 shifter tower. I have 97 wrangler with 4.0 and a ax15 5 speed manual transmission. (Tower leaking from gasket). I I pull center counsel and came in over the top. Easy way.
Part numbers for the replacement parts found most of them on Amazon and seem to fit like factory.
* crown automotive- P/N (5252043)gaskets ( it takes two). With metal plate in between the gaskets. I found out the hard way and only ordered one.
*Omix-Ada P/N 18886.86 manual transmission shifter bushing.
*Crown shift retainer seal P/N (N/A) it on Amazon just type the name above
*Omix-Ada P/N 18886.85 ( boot for top of tower
*Omix-Ada P/N 18886.95 ( mid shifter boot bolts over lower tower to body) I would order all stuff listed above. Because it’s most likely all needs replaced and may as well go in and do it all at once. . Or
* I ordered this kit from (ALL GEARS) website (AX15 shifter lever kit) P/N 5252055. Picture below. And used parts from this kit as well to replace worn retainer cup and shifter seal as well. Only 56$ for kit. Lower shifter arm was shorter than stock. So I used factory lower shifter. It was not damaged. I used a pickle fork to separate the lower shifter from the upper shifter in a vice. After removing the whole tower assembly from transmission. I also used a strap wrench to remove shifter knob from the top.
*torque on the four bolts is between 60-88 in-lbs. hope this help out the guy or gal
