99 4.0 engine loses power momentarily around 2000 RPM

Some of you haven't had kids who watched The Wiggles and it shows.... :)

99 4.0 engine loses power momentarily around 2000 RPM

Wiggled it like Captain Feathersword trying to get into the Yellow Wiggle's pants at the Christmas party. Same result as he got!

99 4.0 engine loses power momentarily around 2000 RPM

Update: this time I let the engine warm up at idle for about 3 minutes before I pulled out of the driveway. Absolutely no hint of the hesitation - first time in a long time so the issue certainly appears to have some correlation to the time-from-cold-start parameter.

99 4.0 engine loses power momentarily around 2000 RPM

Oh it definitely cuts - like total power loss for just a second or so, usually accompanied with a "blat" out of the exhaust like a mild backfire. Its just resoundingly odd to me that it *only* does it once, almost always at the exact same spot at the end of my street and then never so much as...

That's a really interesting idea! will try that tomorrow...

99 4.0 engine loses power momentarily around 2000 RPM

6 months later and....still the same issue. It only ever does it now when the engine is cold and its always as I turn right at the end of the street. It hiccups, I sometimes get a pop like a mild backfire and then it runs normally with absolutely no other symptoms. Way too consistent to be an...

    Calling all HAMs, antennas?

I originally ran a Comet CA-2X4 type antenna as this covers not only the 2M and 70cm bands but also does a half decent job of covering some out of band applications as its a wider Q than most dual band antennas. From memory there is a sub-model that specifically has extra coverage for MARS/CAP...

    4.0 intake manifold lesson learned

We don't put salt on our roads in Western Australia so unless we go hunting out on the edge of the Western Desert where there are big saltpans our old Jeeps tend to stay alive for much longer out here than in the Rust Belt of the US. CJ's are not common here though - the TJ's whilst not the...

    4.0 intake manifold lesson learned

Patience, patience, patience! Go into the job knowing that its going to either be dead simple or super frustrating and the margin between those two extremes is tiny. If you accept you may need to have the manifold on and off 3 or 4 times to get it right at least you wont be so frustrated. I...

    Adding A/C

It very much depends on what year you have. The AC systems changed a lot from 97-98 to the 99 year (which tends to be a unicorn) to the 00-06 years which are fairly similar. Like @Deputy Dodge I have a 99 and worse, a 99 in RHD so www.jeepair wasn't an option. I wound up getting the pipes and...

Brake fluid reservoir dry - best course of action?

KennethS has ID'd the most likely culprit - leaking rear slave / wheel cylinders. Not a difficult DIY job and not very expensive unless you have OCD like me and wind up replacing ever single component of the drum brakes "while you are in there"!!!

Dyno Testing Bolt-ons On The 4.0

So it's always difficult to provide constructive feedback when someone has gone to a tremendous effort and not appear to be a Negative Nancy so kudos to you Mac for managing this. Some really useful tips there for those of us just starting out on the YT journey. Its probably obvious to all...

How Freely Should a Water Pump Spin?

My experience with them is that the TJ water pumps have a bit more friction new than most other ones I have fitted. I shared @SSTJ 's concerns when I swapped my last one out but it seems to work just fine.

What upstream O2 sensor do I use for the 1999 Jeep TJ 4.0?

@jupiterkog for a '99 TJ the upstream and downstream O2 sensors are now the same part. This is the new standard - the manual and online sources will show that they are different upstream and downstream but in effect what happened is that NTK had 2 variants of identical sensors that were only...

Loud engine ticking from 03 Wrangler X 4.0

Good question. In theory, the scope will show what's going on, yes. In practice, the visibility is always limited with the scope and the ability to discern actual cracks versus lines in the piston skirt is challenging if you don't have experience in doing it. Its a great tool if you know what...
