I tried searching but either there isn't a thread on it yet or my forum-fu is lacking.

I'm looking for driver-accessible storage options, namely, the stuff you don't want zipped up in a bag that you might access while driving or just simply need quick access to. When I go somewhere with the wife or a friend, having a couple drinks, phones, etc to put somewhere where they won't end up under the seats while the glovebox and center console's tiny compartments are already taken by things like sunglass cases, documents, phone chargers or whatever else is a bit of a pain.

Are there any elegant solutions to this out there that I'm missing?

Your main options are overhead storage, underseat storage, and saddlebag storage that sits above the rear wheelwells, which is only somewhat driver-accessible but very practical.

Here's where my phone goes, although I turn it 90 degrees

This may be a little too specific, but I've got Bartact seat covers and they have molle straps on the sides an back (in addition to zip pockets in the front and back of the seat). Each seat cover comes with a pouch that attaches via the molle straps and those pouches, combined with the zip pockets, have proven to be an excellent storage option for my needs (the pouches can attach anywhere on the back or sides of the seats).

The small version that comes with the front seat cover fits perfectly on the side of my seat - right where a center console would be. Also, not pictured here, is the back of my driver's seat with 2 pouches; one small like what's shown here and one about 2x the size. While seated, both driver and passenger can easily access the zip pockets on the front of their seats, as well as everything on the back of the other seat.

Again, kind of specific, but if you've got some way to attach pouches, a similar setup could fit the bill.

I have the same seat covers, and they are awesome. The kids each have their own pouch for their crap on the back of each front seat, then on the sides of the front seats you can use the straps for sunglasses, pen/pencils, pressure gauge, etc. I kept balking at the price of the Bartacs for awhile, but when I finally pulled the trigger I'm very glad that I did.

Oh, also both front seats have a zipper pouch on the front of the bottom cushion.

No doubt; may sound quirky, but they were really part of my 'build plan' in looking at how to set up the interior and how I'd store/access things based on how I use the TJ.

Great suggestions all, I've definitely got some things to consider!

The seat back storage is definitely something I want to pick up, but I was really talking about the kind of "unload your pockets" type of storage with immediate access. The expanded center console seems like a neat idea as long as it doesn't block seat movement, and I like the "saddle bags" idea... I don't need seat covers at the moment but I really dig the idea and will look into this further.

I'll have to look into overhead storage options as well. Maybe there's something out there where I can mount the cb and have some cubby room as well. I don't need a lot more space, but it feels like there's always phones and wallets and stuff floating around by the e-brake anytime I bring someone along for a ride LOL.
