I've looked at Expedia, and Hotwire in the past. Who do you guys use for the best deals?
The reason I'm asking:

I'm planning a trip, we will land in Vegas rent a car then head to Lake Havasu, AZ. When the week is over we will take three days looking around making our way to Lake Travis, TX. We will drop off the car and fly out of San Antonio.

Alamo and Sixt have been my go to's recently. If you arrive and depart from the same location in the future, I'm aware you're not this time, TURO is also a great place to rent from.

If you pre pay, make sure to screen shot the vehicle type page. Lately the agents have been trying to pass off a size down to what you paid for. If they try that, show them the printed screenshot and speak loudly. The agents don’t want the folks behind you to learn the trick.

I got screwed over by Hertz and Enterprise on the same day. I won’t rent from either of them again.

Alamo is my go-to. My sister thinks I rent from them because I live in San Antonio, but that’s not it. Prior to the pandemic they would give me an upgrade every time I rented a car. Theyhad the best rates and they’re always friendly on top of that and that has stuck with me. Alamo all the way!

I belong to National's Emerald club (free BTW) I book the cheapest car available and take anything in the isle. Have had Escalades, Tahoe's and any else in the isle for sub compact prices.

I don't even shop around, I just book with national for this reason. About every 4th or 5th time I'm able to grab a hemi Challenger. Worst case I've ended up with a minivan in Nashville once, but I couldn't argue with the convenience.

They cost a little more but it's worth every dollar to skip the counter and just go.

Hertz Presidents circle is the same way. Rent a Fiesta and pick a Range Rover.

There is no reason to ever have to go to the counter for a car rental.

I've rented hundreds of vehicles thru enterprise. Always a pleasure and have always pointed or called out issues and it was handled.

I rent from Hertz. I’m driving a Hemi Charger now. I’m presidents circle since I travel so much for work. Last year my end of year tally was over 30,000 miles. I’ve been happy but lately the car selection has gone to hell. I rented from Avis exclusively for over 10 years but that ended after they blamed me for getting car jacked in Dallas and blackballed me. So fuck them.

As as frequent traveler I’ll make one recommendation and it’s the most important. Use the booking sites all you want, Expedia, Travelocity, or whatever to check what’s available but never book through them. Book direct. They’ll match prices and you’ll get much better everything. Especially the hotel rooms.

3 company's own 95% of rental cars. Enterprise owns Alamo and National. Avis owns Budget, Payless and Zip Car. Hertz owns Dollar and Thrifty. That being said I mainly rent from Enterprise and National but I always check for the best price from all of the companies. I ALWAYS book derect. I am a member of both National and Enterprises frequent rental programs. I prefer National. With there Emerald Club I just book the class of car I want and then I get upgraded to the next level. All I do is go to the isle I’m assigned and pick out a car drive it to the gate and drive off when I bring it back I just check in and leave. I never have to go into the office I verify the charge and they email the reciept. I book one way rentals 1-3 times a year mostly out of Vegas. One tip when you book one way and have to go through the office is to ask if the have an out of state car they have to move out. I’ve been upgraded to some nice cars doing this. Be prepared and book early because invitories are low and prices are much higher now.

With Emerald club I book compact and they give me a choice of anything I want....maybe I was lucky the few times I rent

I was in Vegas last month for work. I used Avis, we have accounts with Avis and Budget. They were only a couple bucks different in rates. I will say my car was ragged out and dirty. Plus while I was waiting to pick it up a guy was in there complaining that the first car they tried to give him had the check engine light on and the second was knocking...

While you are there check out the Shelby museum. It's free and really cool if you are into motorsports history.
