Metallic grinding while driving

Hey everyone I’ve looked all over to try to figure out my problem and can’t seem to figure it out so I need some help. So recently I’ve noticed a grinding noise coming from my rear passenger trie while driving that definitely sounds metal on metal. The issues I’m having is it’s not constant, as I drive fast it gets faster and If I slow down it slows down. I originally thought it was a rock caught in my tires from gravel trails but I haven’t found anything. I was thinking it’s drum brake related but I can’t seem to find any information for a problem like this so any thoughts or suggestions would be great

I’d put the rear axle up on jack stands and in neutral and move things around. Look and listen, see if you have a dragging brake. Or a bad axle bearing.

I would suggest you chock the front tires before jacking up the Jeep.
Either place the transmission in neutral and spin the axle by hand as Modoc Guy posted above OR have a friend assist you.
Place the transmission in gear and allow the tires to turn slowly.
Inspect the tire as it turns looking for a wobble (bent rim or bent axle flange), remove tire and listen for rubbing drum on brake shoe backing plate OR rubbing brake shoes on drum (shoes not fully retracting), inspect the axle seal for dampness and listen for noises coming from axle hub bearing (bearing going bad).

I was really hoping nobody would say Alex bearing lol, I’ll put it up on some stands and see what I can find, thanks guys

i had the same thing on my 97. had slung a brake shoe......sounds like thats your problem, pull the drum and i bet thats what you find ! easy enough to fix...but i was 200 miles from home with no tools turkey hunting, so i drove it home got in my bronco and headed back. well got almost back to my camp and stopped at my dad's house, bronco wont start ! WTF fuel pump went out but atleast we had tools there. 3 hour fuel pump change and back on the road.

sounds like a fun time, so did you get a master rebuild kit or just replace the shoes ?

i did it all . all new springs, shoes and drum

Update: turns out I was wrong and it’s the front wheel bearing… got a new project for the weekend

Wish I had seen this post earlier in the week, I used to have the exact same thing in my old equinox. It would burn through wheel bearings every few thousand miles, and it manifests itself exactly as described it. Glad to see you found the culprit though!
