Has anyone heard of the website GovPlanet? Apparently, it sells retired military equipment and vehicles and also some surplus stuff. I saw their trailers were DIRT cheap and quite attractive as a base for a trailer build. It has a pintle hitch so a swap would have to happen but there are ton like this: http://www.govplanet.com/for-sale/M...|d+asc,mode|8,mf|1&rr=0.25&hitprm=&pnLink=yes

opinions??
Those trailers are as wide as a Humvee, I'm not sure that it would work well behind a TJ.

Dylan - I've always thought that that size of military trailer is a bit big for a Jeep. The smaller M416's and similar one are about right. I've heard of GovPlanet and there's a similar distributor up here but the name escapes me. Are far as I know they are a good source for a trailer.

I'm not sure if you're familiar with Expedition Portal forum. There are lots of build threads that will give you a good idea of what can be done with military and other trailers ...

I was about to say this as well. It's too much weight to safely tow behind a TJ unfortunately.
x3 ...I think weight could be an issue, and that's before you put anything in it !....not sure if there are any places you can trim the fat of it either. but I can see the appeal, it does look great.

Weight is definitely an issue. You don't want to tow something that heavy behind a TJ, it will be incredibly dangerous given a situation where you need to hit the brakes (or similar).

The TJ with it's short wheelbase was simply not designed to tow the much.

For towing behind a Jeep, you want an M416, but nothing bigger.

This is one of my buddies setups.

I agree. The M416 box dimensions are generally 6'Lx4'Wx1.5'H which is plenty of room for most camping trips. I had a line on one for $1,200 CDN (about $900 USD) so the prices are good. It was in great shape and the guy, a JK owner, had already swapped out the axle for a current one with brakes and Moab wheels. I was very tempted but was already too far into a build of my own - box is 1' shorter, same width and 4" taller. One thing about the M416's is that most (all?) don't have a tailgate. They're meant to keep the water out. A lot of guys build one in which, I think, makes them much more versatile.
