Piss & Moan Table

I'm pretty used to roundabouts having experienced many in my worldly travels. Also have two pretty good sized ones just north of town on the state highway. Semis and farm equipment fit well, though I have to use quite a bit of upper body English to wrestle the sidecar through.

But, yes, much more training and testing is needed for drivers in the US. Hell, many can't even work a 4 way stop properly, let alone a roundabout.

Roundabouts and DDIs (diverging diamond interchanges) are here to stay, and I’m fine with that. Huge gains in efficiency. In my part of the world, if you want to install a new light, you will be told to use one of these solutions instead in many cases.

But change is difficult for societies. I have noticed that after a period of adjustment, most drivers adapt and gain confidence. It will take more time before it’s second nature.

Back on topic: I hate when lights aren’t timed properly. I know that sometimes that’s due to pedestrian crossings being activated, but I would think that they could be timed within the framework of vehicle timing? Seems like a good application of AI.

I'll take a roundabout over a damn traffic light any day of the week. 50% or more of traffic lights wouldn't be needed if drivers were competent, which they're not. And turn the darn things off late at night! Many of them here in Florida go to blinking red/yellow after midnight. Saves all kinds of time and fuel.

Interesting thing about stoplights, while many prefer the ease and convenience of the stoplight, most don't understand why cites want to use a round about instead.

I had a neighbor who worked for a stoplight mfg company tell me what the basic stoplight cost was, and I was shocked. Mind you, this was 40 years ago, but a 4 way setup was in the $200,000 to $250,000 range. and that's not counting upkeep, and the electricity to run it daily.

Roundabouts aren't trendy, their cheap.

I haven't encounterd those on any of my trips through Salt Lake yet.

I'll stick to my under 1000 population, no stoplight or round about having, rural life thanks...lol

That may be a DDI, or similar. I watched a video posted by our DOT to educate drivers, but still freaked out a bit the first time I drove it. It just feels wrong at first! Once you get accustomed, it’s awesome.

Looks expensive when viewing from above. Experienced them a couple times, not impressed.

These, and DDI's look like a cluster fuck waiting to happen IMHO.

We have those and round abouts in Nevada. They do take some getting used to but the sad part is the old people don't understand them and seem to be causing a lot of problems. Then I have to listen to my 80 year old mother tell me how people are always honking at her going down the road I asked her how fast are you going she said 25 :eek: I told her that road is a 45 speed limit I would honk also She just said they need to deal with it.:oops::oops::oops:

We've had traffic lights go down during rush hour the last several weeks. Then a pile of accidents because people don't understand the flashing red means stop. So they drive through at the speed limit and hit cars in the intersection.

The lady in the roundabout going the wrong way was trying to make a left turn, and didn't understand the concept.

You know the old saying, "Two wrongs don't make a right, but three lefts do."

We have a couple of those in Colorado Springs. It feels unnatural to have oncoming traffic to your right when you're in the left turn lane. They're not intersections I frequent so I don't know if or how much traffic flow was improved. It seems like they take up a lot of real estate.

I'm a big believer in the roundabout in suburban, rural and semi-rural areas where you can sit at a traffic light for a minute or two when there's not much cross traffic going through. I don't know how well they work in heavily populated areas because I avoid heavily populated areas.

That reminds me here’s another piss and moan.

Why’d they have to add all this yellow left turn shit when it was always known prior that you could turn left on green if you had a clear turn? We’ve slowed down everything by making a left turn not possible due to a red arrow when nobody is coming.

Did we punish everyone due to stupid people?

In Oregon, there are almost no two way intersections where you can turn left unless you have a green left turn arrow. I absolutely fucking hate that.

I find it even more bizarre that it is legal in Oregon to turn left on a red light if you are on a two way street and turning on a one-way.
