The shock does not hit the mount if you set you bump stops so the shock doesn't compress 100%, which you don't want anyway.Help a newb understand how this helps. It looks like the shocks travel is still limited by smashing into the mount...no different than before. Now the shock is extended when this happens?

The rest of us just buy the right length shocks.I think it's great. This is how many companies are born. Magpul started from a few guys putting tape on the bottom of their magazines so it's easier to get them out of the mag pouches when needing to reload their weapons.
A little refinement and you could be in business.
And the socket hack is a clever use of field expediency!two thumbs up.
According to the Rancho fitment chart these are the right size shock for my Jeep, just sayin. The rest of us just buy the right length shocks.
This is a pretty good concept allowing for extra shock travel. I wouldn't use sockets since it's putting a round peg through a square hole, and spacers can be found pretty easily (see here). Not quite $9, but much cleaner. Also the bolts can be ordered at the same time from the same place and no need to go to the store.
Regardless of what any chart says or any manufacturer thinks, they are the right length or they aren't, just sayin.According to the Rancho fitment chart these are the right size shock for my Jeep, just sayin.
Should be a T-Shirt or a sticker. For sureVoted Forum Response of the Day.
I would agree with you but Ranchos for instance only come in 1.5” increments which caused me to be slightly stuck between sizesThe rest of us just buy the right length shocks.
I will post pics tomorrow of how I did my no weld mod to get more.Has anyone done this with the front shocks aswell?

Don't have any pics, sorry.I looked through your build thread and could not find anything. Can you share how much you can drop the shock through the front mount? Pics?
To thisRanchoshocks 24" extended, 15-1/2" collapsed = 8-1/2" of shock travel
I get your concept that allows a longer travel shock, but that would require installing a shock with longer travel. The above feat seems it would require a shock stretcher. What am I missing? Were you stating your shock travel (extended and compressed lengths with your set up) not the Rancho's actual capable shock travel (unrestricted extended and compressed lengths) in the beginning? So now I have over 9-1/2" of travel and the shocks are never topped or bottomed out.
