Got started on replacing the water pump, hoses, metal water pump inlet tube and tstat + housing finally today. Passenger side lower fan shroud bolt was a real pain to reach but otherwise pretty straightforward. The biggest problem I've run into was all the caked up oil and gunk congealed along the edges of the mating surface (see bottom two photos). I don't think I can put the new one on until I clean the gasket as well as all the accumulated crap around the edges. Suggestions welcome. I probably just need to sack up and clean it.

Also, getting the gasket off is as bad or even worse than I was told to expect ha. Keeping it away from the openings was tough, even with towels stuffed in there. Tomorrow I plan to finish cleaning the surface and then I'll put it all back together.

Is that a loose bolt on your timing cover?
Last pic at the bottom.

It was yesterday, 25Apr20, but I replaced the catalytic converters. Took a while lying on my back in the driveway. Hardest part was getting the new ones up to the manifold. New ones have heat shields that increases their diameter by about 1/4" so I had to move the drive shaft. Once they were up there the bank 2 bolts went in without the loss of too much knuckle meat. Bank 1 was a different story. After several attempts and proof that I was in the USN for 8 yrs, I looked from a different angle and could see that the flange didn't line up. Little pry bar work and CLUNK! then the bolts went in a little easier. Got everything else secured and Cleared the P0420 code. Will drive it today to see how it goes.

🍻
