What's the worst mod you've ever done to your Jeep?

Maxxis Trepadors - Horrific on the street in rain and snow, even for mud tires. My KM2's were much better and I plan to switch back to KM3's as soon as these are worn down. I literally cannot drive the Jeep in the snow without fear of crashing, which is not how I felt with the BFG's at all.

Adams Driveshafts - I blew out shaft after shaft (CV's and slip joints). I think I went through 6 or 7 total driveshafts (front and rear) in 30,000 miles. One of them didn't even last 3,000 miles before it started causing vibrations. I put Tom Wood shafts on and haven't had any problems yet (with two cross country trips mixed in there). Very confusing as many people swear by Adams, but they just never seemed to work for me.

Stretching the front forward 1.5" which caused havoc with the steering box location and a radiator modification and additional body lift...

Big heavy bumpers and a swing away tire carrier. I spent several years getting rid of the squeaks and rattles. Then the carrier started breaking apart. Then I got to the point where it all just got in the way.

x2 my first bumpers, were to big n heavy.
and not having the bed liner sprayed in. i rolled it, it's not bad but could have been better.

Electric fan.... by far the worst. Should have research it better. Even with a high output spal fan, at highway the engine temp would start creeping up. The relay for such amp rating would burn up within a week. Even made a special shroud, but it dint work either. Back to stock fan clutch and very happy.
Interesting, some TJ’s came from the factory with an electric fan setup. Stock Jeep stuff.

They did and we've been through this before. Why, if they had a full plug and play system for the 2.4, did they not just convert the 4.0 to run the same stuff? The only change would have been the extra wiring and controls for the fan, so why didn't they do it?

They certainly weren't shy about other changes even though they were most of the way through the model run. They even changed the whole bus on the 05-06 so why not a fan change and use the same parts across the whole line like they did with the radiator?

My guess is that if they continued with 4.0 production they eventually would do an electric fan. But why mess with a engineered design that's been proven and evolved for 50 years to near its highest efficiency, when it is going extinct in 2 years?

No one wants to work on a dead project.

My last jeep, a YJ, I installed a Spartan lunchbox locker in the front Dana 30...in North Idaho, in the winter, what a disaster. Having to power up grades with curves on compact snow and ice became a 2wd proposition. Effectively turned my YJ into a 3 season rig.

Definitely my worst previous mod...at least for my purposes.

Changes my lights in my gauage cluster to LED. You either have on or off. The power to LED do not dim. Going to change back soon. Waste of money and time.

I lifted it... several times.... several Jeeps since my first M38 in 1972. Now I am back to a stock TJR. Best decision ever. 22mpg, a smooth ride, best Jeep ever. No this mod breaks that part now another mod leads to the next mod. Jeep R&D is way better funded than any aftermarket marketing company. Jeep built it right. I love being stock again.

The only time I've had an electric fan setup get hot on the highway was if it was wired wrong and running backwards
Theres push or pull. You can't get it wrong....

It would pull you shirt in a very noticeable way if you stepped right in front of the grill. It worked perfect around town untill there was heavy traffic. The temp would start creeping up too.
On top of that, the horrible and obnoxiously loud fan noise. Everything is nicer with the oe fan clutch. It pulled about 30A. Even upgraded to a durango alt.

It that logic were sound, why mess with the communication bus, why integrate the TCM into the PCM, why move from a formed steel trans cover to one that is injection molded, why change the center console, why change fuel pumps, fuel tanks, and the connectors for the pump? All of that is 2 years only and extinct in 07.

My guess is the existing electric fan wasn't good enough for the 4.0.

I had/have the XRC carrier and bumper. My complaints are mostly directed toward the carrier. After awhile it began to shake/rattle like crazy, it also sagged an inch if not more. I had to pick it up in order for it to fit into the latch housing. The latch also allows water to enter and will rust. I had to beat mine open with a mallet if I wanted in the back (not kidding either). The carrier is mounted to a post that is mounted on the bumper. The carrier just sleeves over the post. A good carrier would have a bearing there. I will say though, that the bumper did include frame tie-ins, which many manufactures do not include (you have to buy separately). And the finish on the bumper has held up well despite all the gouges and dents mine has. Where I wheel though, the bumper is far to large and takes away from my departure angle. It gets hung up on the corners, as well as the low mounted hitch.

Ive since replaced the carrier with a bestop, and the bumper is not far behind. Make sure you snub the carrier, I am pretty sure thats why mine started to squeak and rattle.

If you would ask that rock to not park so close your tire carrier might not squeak as much.

Yeah, you're probably right. I installed an electric fan 2 years ago, not 1 single problem yet. How long until i can consider my engineering project reliable and worth it? I spent abouts $175.
