Novak Conversions Jeep Wrangler TJ engine mounts

A Story of Indecision and Frivolous Spending

The Wizard brackets finally got here today, so I went to drop them off at the shop. They're getting very close to being done with my TJ, and he said he expects it will for sure be sometime this week. They are still finishing some things and figuring out how to mount the rear shock reservoirs without the hose line being in the way. It seems like a 90 degree bend fitting would be very useful for this, but he said that would require draining all the nitrogen from the shocks and such, so he's going to look at other ways people have done it.

The total is going to end up at $5000 even he said, the extra being because they installed my RubiCrawler at the same time as well.

Here's some progress photos I snapped while I was there:

I can't wait to actually drive it and test it out!

He said he's really impressed with the kit, and while this is their first install for this kit, he hopes to do more in the future.

I definitely recommend these guys to anyone in Oregon. Really great guys, and they run a stand-up business.

Your shop is dumb, and you had the answer right here on the board, you had my permission to get in touch, and to give them my phone number.

The hose points back, it wraps behind the mount forward, the reservoir sits on top of the frame arch on a simple bracket it gets hose clamped to. The Fox clamps and rubber bits go in the trash.

I gave them your number and told them to use it, if they didn't, that's on them. Believe me, I dropped your name and number at least 3-4 times.

I saw these photos for the front mounts, but I didn't see one for the rear. The rear shock reservoir is mounted identical to the front, correct? If so, when I left the shop, he said that's what he was going to try. He just wasn't sure if it would require a 90 degree fitting to keep it from jamming into the tub.

No, like this. The hose would drop down after the tub is clearance worked slightly and then mounted to a piece of flat strap 3/4 x 1/8 with small bends on each end that is welded to the top of the arch.

You've already seen folks recommending a rim selection regardless of how much it has the potential to affect braking. Is it really hard to understand after that? Given that I run a couple sets of the JK take-offs on two rigs and a set of the TJ Moabs on Kat's, I'm a fan of the design, more so a fan of cheap rims that are high quality, with good tire selection. I buy the tires and rims together when I find new ones for sub 450. I've bought 3 sets like that and I have at least 4 more sets of the rims. I'm looking for 3 of the black JK versions to finish out another set.

I like the design and looks, the amount of dish one has or doesn't have doesn't bother me in the least. From 15 feet away no one notices anyway and given how which rim was on the Orange one had to be pointed out??? You can probably guess the rest.

If you pinned me down to my all time favorite rim, it's this one. Drop dead gorgeous in person.

Agreed. If you are setting up for the JK rubicon tire size, you can't find a better value than like new takeoffs. People practically give them away so they can lift and run 35's to drive to the mall.

Not a huge fan of the lettering of the Rekon, but maybe it looks better in person.
Style and fashion (and brake rotors) aside, doesn't this lead to a discussion of 15" vs 17"?
I personally wouldn't do more than a 33" tire on a 15.

I was planning on adding hydroboost to mine. I'm not sure if it's overkill or not, but does it ever really hurt to have more braking power?

I would see if you have enough brake the way it is now before you pony up the cash for hydroboost.

did you ever end up getting the savvy front bumper or no??

Yes, it should arrive this week. I went a slightly different approach than @tomtaylz did and got the winch guard / bull bar.

I actually really do like my JCR front bumper, but the Savvy one speaks to me more.

The good news is that I can easily sell my JCR bumpers for around $800 or so, so I won't really lose anything from this mishap.

Why is that?

How do I determine if I have enough brake? I mean it seems to brake really good to me, but like I said, would it hurt to have even better brakes?

I'm just not sure how one would even come to the conclusion that they would benefit from hydroboost, so I'm curious.

Are they done with the exhaust?

No, they aren't done with it. They got it as far as they did, making certain that the upper links don't contact it, even when the suspension is fully cycled. He said they had to play around with a number of possibilities, but this one ended up working.

They still have to route the exhaust down and out the side, as well as make some other tweaks from what I understand. He told me at this point they have the major stuff done, but they're going to spend this week dialing in all the smaller things, which includes finishing the exhaust.

It does. In fact, it is the only set of rims I've ever seen where I really wanted a set and I'd never run them. Too much rim to not use them, too pretty to use. I'd mess them up 100 feet into the first trail.

He has enough brake right now to lock up 40's in a heart beat. He will struggle keep them broken in since he has too much brake. I would never have put that kit on his rig.
However, I wasn't consulted.

I’m still debating the winch guard, glad you got it as I can debate more whether I want to pick it up.

Super 16 it says in there somewhere.

Ahh, I missed that!

I should have consulted @mrblaine about this before I ordered the 17" brakes then.

Is the winch guard a bolt-on affair? I wasn't sure if it was welded on or not.

I really like the winch guard after seeing it on the Impact Orange one.

I don't like the look of a 35 on a 15" wheel. Hydroboost gives you more pressure and I believe more volume.

What application is the 17" kit for than? Isn't it generally thought to not run more than a 35" tire on TJ outers?

Yep it bolts in the same place as the recovery hooks/light tabs.

"Will fit any 1997-2006 Jeep Wrangler and 2007+ Jeep Wrangler w/ Savvy Bumpers. It mounts with the six front 1/2″ bolts. Works great with our bumpers or other that has a flat mounting surface."
