A Story of Indecision and Frivolous Spending

The 42RLE suffers from inherent overdrive shift issues (ever notice how it's constantly hunting for 4th gear?) due to the stupid .69 overdrive gear ratio, which is something the original engineers themselves (Jim Frens) have pointed out. .

I understand the frustration with the hunting of overdrive but the 4L60E uses identical gear ratios including the .69.....

4L60E: 3.06, 1.62, 1.00, .69
42RLE: 2.84, 1.57, 1.00, .69

Why is everyone suggesting less gear in the diffs? Isn't it based solely on the tire size?

The 5.3 has a lot more torque (about 100 more) , and a better shift program so it isn't as eager to go into OD, and can easily push a TJ at 2000 rpm or so at freeway speeds.

I suppose that is my question. If the 4.0 had more torque (like supercharged) and you could change the shift programming (B&G?) you could run less gear and move the bad harmonics higher.

Here's the info on the hybrid case.

Still waiting to hear back from B&G as to whether the shift points can be controlled via their software... that remains to be seen.

But yes, if it is possible, this might actually work.

Either way, I had a good discussion last night with Chris Sines who owns Bones Customs here in Oregon. He's done a number of V8 swaps in TJs (including one in his personal TJ), and he told me quite a bit.

He's going to send me a quote as well, so we'll see. If this does happen, it won't be until January at the earliest. I'm thinking more-and-more that it will. I really like the idea of a V8 engine, as the tuning options for it would be so much better than the 4.0. In addition, the extra power really would be nice.

I can get extra power out of the 4.0, but at the sake of reliability. Not to mention that I'll then be 100% dependent on premium fuel, which I don't really want to. With the V8, it doesn't require premium fuel!

Due to a 3 hour long conversation with Chris Sines and some serious issues with Dave and his worth ethic, I'm no longer having Dave do his mid-arm. Chris recommended (and I will be following his recommendation) that I pick my TJ up from them and take it home.

That being said, I ordered a Savvy mid-arm and I'll have someone else install it for me. According to Savvy, it shipped today, which is awesome, since I just placed the order today!

I don't want to air the dirty laundry with Dave on the forum since I have a lot of respect for his knowledge and skill. However, I will say (and @psrivats along with many others will agree with me on this), that he has no idea whatsoever how to run a business... not a single bit. To say I'm pissed off with him would be an understatement.

At some point I may create a tactful and respectful thread as a warning to others about dealing with Jeep West and Dave, but I'll hold off on that for a little bit until I cool off.

I've found two places who have said they will install my Savvy mid-arm locally. Both say that it should be done in 1-2 weeks at the very, very most.

@tomtaylz, this means I should be able to get you your control arms sooner as oppose to later. At the pace Dave was working, it literally would have taken me 6 months to get them to you, honest to goodness. Sorry to put you through this inconvenience. He had told me 3-4 weeks, yet after a month, he hadn't even so much as touched it... it just sat there.

Certainly a bit of a surprise, however I can completely understand! In the end you'll be happy and end up with what you want; and in this case likely a much better timeline :)

Yep, I agree! You and I both know that it doesn't take 6 months to install a lift, even a mid-arm. Assuming it's being worked on every day, that should take an average shop around 7-10 days at the very most (unless they're waiting on parts).

Sorry to hear about the hassle. What a PITA.

Perfect, when it gets to the shop you don’t need them right? ;)

Haha, correct! Well once it gets to this new shop, he told me around 7 days at most. So that's refreshing to hear!

Tell me about it. Nothing like knowing your TJ sat outside for over a month without having any work done to it. Yet no one bothered to call and tell you that it was just sitting there. I had assumed this entire time that some sort of progress was being made, even if it was just little stuff.

@Chris why don't you send the transfer case down at the same time. I'm willing to plug it into my jeep to find out if the vibration is caused by the t-case. You should do it. You know... for science. :risas3:

Things can only happen in baby steps without pissing off my wife... though I think she's become numb to all of this by now.

I think I should change the title of this thread to, "Project Pissed Off Wife: A Story of Indecision and Frivolous Spending".

I had my dirtbike in a local shop getting the top end rebuilt. Same issue sat for 2 months until I started calling daily for updates. They just sat on it and did nothing the whole time until I started bitching and moaning daily.

Yep, that's the type you never do business with again, and leave them lots of negative reviews online.

I'm sorry, but the shops I am used to doing business with are the type of places like the guys who did my re-gear.

I called them up and asked them for a re-gear. He told me we can fit you in on the schedule next Wednesday. I said sounds good to me, I'll drop it off then.

I dropped it off, and it was done 2 days later, just like he had originally told me.

Why would I want my vehicle just sitting outside when it could be sitting in my garage, and you could just call me when you're ready to work on it?

At the very, very least, I expect any good shop to call me periodically and tell me what's going on, if they plan on having it for a long time.

That's simply how you run a good business.
