Hey guys. So I got a 02 tj Sahara running stock exhaust. I’m lookin for muffler for under $40 ish whatever’s cheapest. Lookin at mainly glass packs maybe magnaflow or thrush or cherry bomb. Suggestions or comments?

What is your goal?

I assume when you say "glasspack" your talking about the old style straight through muffler, which I find to be obnoxious, especially on a small low power engine, and they often produce a lot of drone.

Magnaflows are nice, but likely out of your budget range. For your budget, DynoMax is a good option. https://www.dynomax.com/

If you want more rumble without drone, a turbo-style is a good option.

A bigger "Ultra Flo" will be somewhat of a gap filler between the turbo style and traditional glasspack. Bigger muffler body = more decibel absorption

There's also the chambered style if you like the sound of Flowmaster, and that's likely within your budget. Again, bigger muffler body = more sound reduction.

Ya I was looking mainly at magnaflow, thrush, or cherry bomb straight through muffler which aren’t too obnoxious and minimal drone. Didn’t know which one is best or sounds best.🤷

Just so you know I was asking because I have stock and want it to sound less sewing machine like and was wondering what sounds best without being too obnoxious. I listened to some sound recordings of glass packs on a tj that don’t sound too bad but don’t know what’s best

Nice save man !

I don't know where you think you're gonna get it put together with a $40 budget.

20ish years ago I drove someone else's 4.0L TJ sporting a cherry bomb style glasspack for about 3 hours because they were exhausted from the drone after 20 hours. God awful experience.

You've got to find some middle ground. The chambered ones radiate into the cabin alot, but the chambered Flowmaster Delta 60 isn't too bad. it was louder than I wanted. IIrc the Super 44 is very loud without drone but the Super 40 drones with the TJ tub.

Straight-through in the magnaflow style 15855 or Ultraflow recommended above gives the best performance with an OK more aggressive sound.

But ultimately I'd go with the Super Turbo from Dynomax.

"Without being too obnoxious" should knock any Cherry Bomb style glass pack muffler off the list then. Not only are they excessively loud, they produce a lot of drone inside the cabin. A traditional glass pack should be thought of as a resonator or race bullet, not an actual muffler. If you're young you will probably like that muffler at first, but it will grow old as you put miles on it. In my experience a straight pipe is basically the same as a traditional glass pack muffler, so if you really want to go that route, save your money and straight pipe it.

For a "good" sound, keep in mind sound is very subjective. I like relatively quiet, deep rubbly sounds, which usually come from a turbo-style muffler, or with a little more noise a large body straight through muffler like the DynoMax Ultra Flo. Magnaflow and DynoMax are my preferred mufflers, and both produce similar sounds.

If you like the chambered sound a Flowmaster 50 or 60 sounds the best to me. 40s are ok but getting loud for daily driving.

To sum it up, if I was in your situation with a relatively tight budget, I'd be looking for a decent sized DynoMax or Flowmaster muffler, no 10s or race bullets.

I've had a bunch of mufflers on my 4.0L vehicles over the years thanks to living in New England and them rusting out frequently. Flowmaster 40 series are just loud, same with glasspacks. They sound cool for about 3 days then you get tired of it.

Here are the ones I recommend from quietest to loudest:
1. Dynomax Super Turbo (stock volume but with a deeper tone and growl)
2. Magnaflow straight through (14" and 18" case, smaller will be louder. Deep tone under throttle, but smooth and not as raspy)
3. Flowmaster 50 series (raspy, louder under full throttle and aggressive idle, quiet at cruise)

The Flowmaster and chambered style mufflers do not last long though, they seem to rust out the quickest or break baffle welds inside. The Magnaflow stainless hold up much better, and the Dynomax Turbo is somewhere in the middle.
