What did you do to / in your garage / shop today?

I grab the three tools I think I need, crawl under and end up making 40 laps. Since I'm still building my shop all my boxes are in the garage...so often that means walking to the garage to grab something or searching everywhere because I didn't put it away the last time.

Then I curse myself for not putting it up on the lift because I thought it would be a quick fix.

This is the crap I'm trying to avoid 🤣

I will normally take 3 sockets, say like a 13,14,15. I will get up and down off the floor alot anyway due to my back.

I can't lay on my back for extended periods of time, plus I look at it as a form of exercise 🤣

So is this

I usually know the size but if I don't, I'll pull the sockets to either side as well. If I'm going to be dealing with multiple sizes while I'm under the hood or vehicle (say more than two sizes), I grab the rail.

Okay cool... So I guess if you're going to put them on rails they have to still come out.

Maybe that's not as much of a pain as I'm thinking. If I leave it in boxes I'm always lugging around shallow and deep metric and SAE. Not sure if that's a pain or it'll save me trips going to get different stuff.

I have many more sets

I bet that's nice, but I bet you know how hard it is for me to justify buying even a second set when I have one already 🤣

I'm sick of my at-home tools also being my jam-into-MR2-trunk tools and also being my jam-into-the-jeep tools. I want home tools and in the various junker car tools.

My goal is to get to a single roller toolbox with common stuff in the drawers. When I need to do something it goes up on the lift and I can just drag the box with me.

That sounds really nice. I wish I could shoot for that but I think I will end up doing work in the driveway and gravel even after the garage is done (lowly 1car). I don't expect the truck to fit inside at all.

I guess I could plan for park outside the garage and roll it to the door though?

All of this is right next to where I work on my Jeep. Top drawer is sockets, second drawer is wrenches and screwdrivers.

When I was in the gravel I'd put big inflatable wheels from Harbor Freight on some of my stuff...but usually it was tool rolls and trays and laps. Those pack outs look nice but too expensive for me.

I've broken so many socket rails.

Don't bother fixing your tool situation until you fix your working conditions.

I spent way too much on trying to buy things to make myself comfortable outside in the gravel, rain and snow and the best answer was build a shop.

Gotta pay to play

Very different tool sets for in the vehicles.

For my truck I'll load it up with Milwaukee, inflator, packouts, electric tools etc. Badlands jack. Torque wrench.

For the Jeep I'd more likely grab a Harbor Freight tool set, Tekton tool set or Crescent, something I don't really care about if something is lost, borrowed or stolen. Then I'll have a bag of various tools depending on what else I think I may need (36mm socket, with extendable 1/2" ratchet for example) I don't usually carry any electric tools in the jeep. I also have a bottle jack.

Yeah I am trying to think of having the garage and how to make that best - while also knowing I will sometimes be forced to work outside still. Which isn't an ideal thing to plan for really.

Socket rails also annoy me the dumb clips break and are either too loose or too tight.

I would hate to have a HF socket break when trying to get off a trail... It happens on the driveway. I think my leftover tools after upgrading the main will be a good quality but less cared about set.

I do like the tekton set you have and we have used before, maybe one day I will pick something up similar. I bought one of those tool rolls like Jeff has and I'm trying to put together a 1-2 bag solution that I can move between cars easier than what I deal with now.

I carry my DeWalt 3/8" and a Walmart special bottle jack in the backpack as well

I unfortunately need to stay away from larger boxes like that because they won't fit where I cram them in the Jeep in front of my cooler / under glovebox passenger seat area, and won't fit inside the MR2 trunk most likely.

They seem way nicer really but I think I am restricted to soft sided stuff. I have this thing to go alongside the backpack now

I looked at tool rolls but I don't normally run a back seat, so I have room. Or I will fold the back seat up and still have room.
