Dana 30. Broke three teeth on the original 4.88s I had in there. Figured I could swap in a new set with minimal changes. Bzzt. Mistake was probably buying cheap Yukon but here I go.

Backlash is in spec. My read is the pinion is way shallow. But I wanted an experienced opinion before I pull the pinion.

What’s wrong with Yukon gears? Asking because that’s what I have in the back. Is there something I should watch for as a failure point? Just Curious.

Quality issues. Should have bought Revolution. Should have used this as an excuse to bump to 5.13s. Thought I could toss these in and be close enough to need a minor adjustment.

Quality issues. Meaning they are known to break teeth?

@hosejockey61 What do you think about that gear pattern?

I can't make heads or tails of that. You're using to much and to thinned it marking compound for one. You can clearly see the build up and it appears very runny.

Since we're not sure where it lies, find both shallow and deep (bracket it) and go from there.

Yeah the bracketing is the hard part. No setup bearings so I'm trying to minimize pulling the bearings off.

The backlash is 12 so I'm going to try and add a little to the passenger side and see if I get better contact.

Yeah the pinion on this one is marked 3.27 and according to the Billavista and other research that's about .6 completely out of spec.

My original is 2.261.

Added .10 to the passenger side. Got the backlash to .10.

My bearing puller murders my shim stacks. Went from .28 to .38 on the passenger side.

Well, you have a choice. Get shims that go outside the races or if you are insistent on putting them under the bearings, then you need either a clamshell puller or setup bearings. I've always put them to the outside as that's what every master install kit supplies.

Also, backlash needs to be in spec, not close, but in spec. You will chase your tail off you do it otherwise. "Shortcuts" like this always end up being the long road...

Yeah I tried finding outter shims and failed.

I have a clamshell puller. It just hooks the shim stack and murders it.

Going to add .10 or .20 to the pinion tomorrow and see what I get.

Do you have the race on when pulling the bearing? I've never had that issue....

Getting closer. Added .008 to the pinion. Pinion shim under the race was .16 now it's .24. Oil slinger is .58.

Backlash went to .08.

I think I'm good on pinion depth now...I think I need to move shims from one side to another.

Billavista says if I have coast side heel contact to move ring gear away from the pinion.

So going to pull carrier and move .10 from passenger to driver's side.

P.S. Had my wife look at pictures and she said I went from a pinion too far away pattern to a pinion too close pattern. So I'm going to decrease the pinion shim by .004.
