What did you do to your TJ today?

Couple months back got to help tune this bad boy in. Got some of its leaks patched up and got the coilovers charged up. Definitely one of the coolest TJs to come through our shop.

I did my oil change in early November and I noticed some battery terminal corrosion. The corrosion was really only on the positive terminal, minimal on the negative. I checked it a couple weeks later and the corrosion was already back, not as much, but growing. Again, only on the positive terminal. I also noticed my clock was running minutes fast. (Something it had never done either.) I took both (corrosion only on the positive terminal and fast clock) as signs that maybe the alternator was pushing out too much power.

I imagine the battery temperature sensor on the bottom was reading too low a temperature and the ECU sent more power to compensate. I took out the battery. Pitched the mat. Completely removed the battery terminals for a thorough spray and wire brush cleaning. Reinstalled the battery and used the under-terminal felt pads and re-greased the terminals.

So far, no corrosion buildup and the clock is right on with the NIST clock I used to set it.

A successful diagnosis - or at least, I found something wrong. Damn front end has had a clunk in it for some time, and its been getting worse. I've jacked up the front end, wiggled things, etc, etc, no joy. Recently, its been getting really noticeable. I went out today to try to finish up that rock lite wiring harness I've been working on - backed the Jeep out of its spot onto the driveway. Clunk, clunk...

"I'm fucking sick of this." - jacked up the front end again, wiggled everything, nothing. Then it occurs to me to disconnect the front swaybar, and test drive it. Nope, clunk still there, driver's side front. Well, maybe its the ball joints or even the front axle U-joints. I'm replacing all that when I get back from Egypt...

Then "someone upstairs" - maybe the Mother Goddess, maybe Athena, maybe my guardian angel, maybe Christ Jesus - taps me on the shoulder, and says "Hey, you. Yea, you dipshit. Check the back." "Yea, but its coming from the front, and I just had the back all torn down and reassembled - its been going on for way before then!" "Listen up, shit for brains. Your hearing is completely useless, Just fucking check it."

So I roll under the back end, just forward of the tire. The very first thing that presents itself is the rear swaybar link. Grab it and give it a tug. CLUNK, CLUNK, CLUNK. Well, I'll be a monkey's uncle. "You might as well check the passenger side too..." Ok, get over there and CLUNK.

Those rear swaybar links were one of the very first things I ever changed out - and the upper bolts were the ONLY thing I didn't touch when I had the rear suspension apart several weeks ago to replace the track bar. I had disconnected the links at the lower end. The entire upper bushing is moving on the bolt. I can't remember if the bushings have a metal center or not - so either the bushings are shot, or the bolts need to be tightened.

I'll find out tomorrow as the sun is going down and that means the mosquitos will be out by the time the muffler cools down enough for me to try a tightening.

It's hard to tell from the angle the pic was taken but I think the adjuster lever might not be sat against the star adjuster properly. That I think may be because the cable guide might not be fitted properly. It is pressed with a lip in the back that needs to sit in the hole in the shoe that holds the spring.

It can be a bit of pain getting that spring and guide seated right. I've even seen guides that fracture around the lip, and have even had a lip break off a guide allowing the guide to shift and stop the adjuster working.

I finished up replacing the evap core. I replaced the heater core 2 years ago and should have replaced the evap core at the same time. I replaced the evap core because my local mechanic filled up the AC system and it wouldn't blow cold anymore after a few months. He wasn't able to find any leaks in the engine bay so suggested that it was the evap core. I finally got around to replacing it. I still need to replace the O-rings on the hard lines going into the evap core. I'll do that in a few days and get everything finished up. I'm going to wait until later in spring, fill up the AC system again, and hopefully that fixes this issue. I normally run the Jeep topless during the summer, but when I take it out wheeling, I put everything back on and want AC because sometimes I'll drive a few hours in the summer.

Also, I wired in the switch for a kill switch.

Finished the Savvy cable shifter install we started a couple of weeks ago. Ran into typical scope expansion because the 4WD shift lever sheared and had to wait on a salvaged used assembly.

Took a little dremmeling to get the old assembly out.

Replaced the transmission mount and the skid plate bolts while we were in there.

4WD working great now.

Jumped into it this morning with a plan to take my brother-in-law for a day ride. Turned the key and it cranked very slowly and would not start. Tried again and it got slower. Pulled out my emergency charger and even though it was fully charged, it could not turn it over. I have used it before. I will pull the battery in the morning and take it to Autozone. Ended up taking my wife's 2021 JLU Rubicon. First real trail time for it. Awesome rig.
