First time Jeep owner; recently got a 2000 TJ that has an aftermarket hardtop. Want to put a soft top on it and looking for recommendations. Considering Bestop Black Diamond or Twill… also looking at setting it back up with OEM. I have no experience with either. Can anyone offer pros and cons?

Quick response here, I recommend the black diamond Bestop during tax season assuming they do another sale like last year (maybe call and ask them). There was no tramp stamp on the TJ top I got, and it was about the same price as a cheaper rampage top I considered when Bestops were more expensive.

Twill doesn’t look right with most TJs imo. I’ve seen twill on newer posh wranglers since I made my decision and I’m thankful I didn’t get it for the TJ. Twill looks good on some built LJ’s I’ve seen; otherwise, it’s better suited for a JK/JL.

Thanks for the input, that’s not something I had considered.

If you don't have the soft top hardware, you may want to consider a frameless top. That way you are not having to buy all the hardware.

Was definitely looking at the frameless (Trektop) for that reason, but after reading some of the horror stories about recent Bestop issues I’m reconsidering. I have a source for OEM frame and hardware so now considering that…. I’m open to all suggestions!

Other companies make the frameless top.

Master top i think and maybe Sierra top does also.

Bestop made the oem tops.

Twill is like wearing an Armani suit with hiking boots.

Good posts above.

As of 2025 I have heard nothing but negative reviews from Bestop and Mastertop closed the Colorado location and moved everything to Mexico. It was already manufactured in Mexico, so nothing changed on that part.
I also run the Mastertop Twill doors to match. As for the MasterTop Skymaster Twill frameless. Not disappointed. I am running the Mopar header.

Mastertop Skymaster

I wish it had the rampage storage feature. Otherwise I love it.

@John Cooper is bias toward Bestop because he loves the tramp stamp.;) 🥳

You need to use a paint marker to make it stand out more.
p.s. I'm guessing your wife NEVER enters the Jeep "Hideout" or she'd make you clean the floor and dust off the air compressor. Get @AndyG to post pics of his garage for comparison only. Zoom in on any windshield pics if you can. ;)

Thanks for the discussion and links. I'm following this also. I'm on the fence deciding between a hardtop or a new soft top.

There's no valid reason for a hard top IMO, unless you bought a TJ to NOT take the top down. They don't keep the heat in better and they aren't quieter than a quality soft top. I've had many of both.
p.s. I've had 3' of snow on my soft top and it was fine.

I was nervous there for moment in my scrolling down, really was not wanting to see a pic of you lowering drawers to reveal that there was another “tramp stamp” that was being discussed.🤭

That's the only tramp stamp I have. I do have a Tattoo that of a picture my oldest son drew about 6 months before he passed in 2001.
