Lifter noise after oil change with Penzoil High Mileage

Any 30W is going to have reduced ZDDP for the flat tappet cam due to EPA regs.

Euro 40 weights, diesel oil, or VR1 will have the most these days, but you have to actually verify the level in the diesel oil these days.

Mobil 1 Classic 10-w30 has ~1200ppm zddp and is formulated into it's additive package. This is probably the highest zddp content you can find today. It's full synthetic though. And $$$

The Rotella T4/T5 10-W30formulations for deisel engine have nearly as much zddp, but more calcium in them to help capture and act as detergent in an engine that produces more soot. Likely not harmful in a 4.0L but they can increase the chance of pre-detonation in gas engines under high compression.

I forgot that M1 has the classic now. It is perfect for flat tappets, but it is expensive.

You don't need high ZDDP for the 4.0L. Maybe for initial break-in or for a stroker with an aggressive cam, but the stock valve spring pressures are pretty low. Not sure why people get so hung up on ZDDP. There are also other anti-friction and anti-wear additives in oil in place of ZDDP in most modern oils.

FWIW the lowest wear numbers I had in a used oil analysis on any of my 4.0 Jeeps was with plain old "conventional" Pennzoil 10w30. I now use MaxLife 5w30 because it helps with my current Jeep's rear main seal weep, but any modern oil will be fine for the 4.0 and much better than oil formulations that were around when the 4.0L was new.

Since you mentioned T4 10w-30, just curious: I recently bought some for my next oil change because it was on sale and I've heard people like it for the 4.0 - would you recommend I take it back?

T4 appears to no longer have the gas engine ratings. No idea what they changed. BITOG probably has a VOA of it.

As always, oil is oil. Change it when you're supposed to and everything will be ok. 🤫 I've been self employed, DRIVING (stop and go deliveries) for more than 38 years. People overanalyze things way too much.

No, it's fine. I ran a couple oil change cycles on the T5 10-W30 and did not notice any weird issues. It's not an optimal formulation for a gas engine, but as long as you aren't running a specifically high compression engine or boost, there is nothing serious to worry about.

In my '04 LJ - Previous owner had oil changed at 89500 miles at a Jeep Dealer and they used 10w30 Mopar with M-090 Mopar filter. Engine was perfectly quiet on cold start. I changed oil at 92500 with Penzoil High Mileage CONVENTIONAL 10w30 and Mopar M-090 filter. No noise after immediately starting to move out of garage, and no noise the second morning I started it. This morning - lifters tapping for about 2-3 minutes before quieting down! Anyone else have this sort of experience?

Nope. I’ve used that same oil for the 5 years that I’ve owned my Jeep, just a different oil filter, but I can’t imagine that would matter.

I don't think the T4 formulation changed. I think the SPI standard did and that change pushed it our of the gas engine ratings.

They would still be able to list the older gas standards it met.

15w-40 still lists SN.

+1

I wouldn't hesitate to run a heavy duty engine oil in a gas engine, like mentioned above most carry the gasoline ratings as well. I know Rotella T4/T6 also carries the motorcycle wet clutch ratings and is popular in the ATV/motorcycle community. I have run it for years in my bikes.
