Car pics too cool not to share

I've always thought the old steam tractors would be fun to own if you had the time, resources and land.

There's a video floating around where one of these steam tractors - and I think it was a Case - was pulling something completely ridiculous like a 52 bottom (or thereabouts) plow!

I've seen it. It's a big multi section platform with people riding and working the plows. I think they do it annually. Pretty cool to see the the old equipment being worked. Also, the amount of power and traction required is crazy.

I went looking for ra video of that tractor and I did a little reading along the way. Here's the AI summary about it.

I didn't know this is a relatively new-build tractor, not one of the originals, of which it seem 9 were built. I think "road locomotive" or "field locomotive" sounds like a better descriptor of it than just tractor.

A guy in the video says each plow creates/needs 1,200 lbs of pulling force. 1200 x 50 = 60,000 lbs of pulling force to move that set up.

I go to the old threshers reunion every year and see them running and working. Way too much work to have to deal with one of them.

Here's a video about it that some random dude made.

We sometimes go to a local one here. There's always a big crowd and some interesting equipment, but it's in early July here in the south which typically means 90 degrees +, full sun with the daily summer storm dumping just enough to make the ground muddy and the relative humidity 80%+. Fun times. :sneaky:

Love it. 150 ponies and 8,000 pound feets of torque. RPM - .5...

🙂

It can be pretty hot/humid in southern Iowa during Labor Day weekend and standing next to all the steam engines makes it even worse. A few years ago the tornado sirens went off a few trees were downed and some campers were shredded and/or flipped over.

All from ONE cylinder!

Do you think they should have built it in a twin?

I want to know what gear ratio that thing is running. I need one of yall to count teeth.

Here's a lot more info on that tractor.

I bet we could make a swimming pool sized batch of ice cream with that thing, which is what traction engines are for. :sneaky:

Edit; I think I just went retarded. I'm supposed to be doing "continuing education" today, so rabbit holes are extra intriguing right now. Anyway, from online sources that tractor is a two speed capable of 2.64 MPH in low and 5.69 in high. She runs at 200 RPM and turns 8 ft tall wheels. My math might not be mathin' correctly, but I think she has an effective 9.25:1 ratio in low gear.

They have a steam engine tractor pull at the event I mentioned. It's slow going but pretty cool.

My local show has two steam shovels (below) that run when it's dry enough. Like you said they're small and slow compared to modern equipment, but watching all of the mechanicals run is very interesting.

Yea, that's the one. Give me 500 acres and I'll turn this rig around... :D
