Nashville TJ's Build - Continued

Those M-300's are a freaking beast.

I don't think there's really any support out there for those axles... I'd guess a D80 is the next step from a 14B but I don't know what the strength differences are either...

I'm just hoping it's a gear quality thing and that these new gears will be the trick...

There is also those who think/agree that shaving the gear weakens it... How do you know? I'd guess only by running it and beating on it? But I haven't found a ton of evidence either way...

Before I threw my sucker in the dirt and quit my job, a customer brought us a 2024 F550 for service and brakes.

We noticed rear wheel seals leaking and play in the axles.

Took it apart and it had been built with the wrong spindle nuts.

We stopped where we were on it, I notified the customer.

He did some digging and the drivetrain was still under warranty. We put everything back together and he took it to Ford.

The spindle nuts were to big and had eaten into the hub on both sides.

Wild stuff

When the 14B disassembly going to happen?

Curious minds want to see what the cause oft the noise is.... Plus I need you to beat on these new gears so I'll know what to do with my next axle...

Probable not until after the holidays. Not in any real hurry - and I have a few other projects in front of it still. I just ordered the install kit - and remembered the correct pinion seal this time...

What do you even get when a 14b isn't strong enough? You never really hear the phrase "two and a half tons and fodeez"

Dana 80..... And then there are larger that aren't Duce axles... The S-110 or S-135

I'm actually leaning (read: hoping) toward it being a debris issue, perhaps from the shave as I discussed above, rather than an overall strength issue. I'll take a very close look when I pull it apart.

Yea I'm hoping it's a debris issue too.....

The other option was that it's a quality issue being they were Yukon and maybe not shaved as well as could be?

I've heard a couple people around campfires say that big power and big tires, the axle ratio should start with 4.xx.

Just things quitters say! Full send the 5.38's

You beat on it so hard it's only now realizing just how badly you hurt it...

:)

If you or someone you know has been injured (in this case your Jeep) in an off roading event... some injuries/damages take time to show up. Be sure to call our offices at, You Play You Pay Legal Services. You "may" be owed compensation... :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO:

The noise would drive me crazy.

Edited to add: My LJ isn’t a trail rig. At low speeds, the noise might be tolerable, but not at highway speeds.

That was my first thought. Years ago a friend of mine had a car with straight cut gears in his transmission, and the gear whine was very prominent. Short trips, it was exciting, but I imagine any time in the car would drive you crazy.

I worked on an "OLD" truck once that had straight cut gears in the rear axle. Never drove it.

And yes I can't imagine driving it @ 60 MPH down the road.
