Continuing my search for my second Jeep vehicle (99 Comanche?)

I am still shopping for a second earlier model Jeep vehicle. Due to financial constrains, I may not make the purchase until after the first of the year (unless something really good comes up).

I just ran across a '99 model Comanche. (Photo below.) 4.0l engine, manual transmission (rare around here), winch, bench seat.

Anybody with experience with the Comanche around that year model? I would assume (perhaps mistakenly?) that it'd be similar in many ways to the Cherokee.

Woah! Just realized that he's asking just over $9,000usd for it. Seems way pricey!

It's going to be near identical to a Cherokee. My problem with those vehicles is I don't like unibody vehicles for any sort of off-roading.

Yeah. The price was in MXN and I didn't calculate until I had already written the post, then I decided to send it anyway. I don't think I'll even look at it.

I generally don't care for unibody construction, either, but I am willing to make an exception for the Cherokee, mainly because I need more space for cargo and I want something I can work on and that won't cost and arm and a leg to maintain.

I didn't occur to me that this was a unibody. The bed being separate from the cab threw me off of that. I have always said that if it is a unibody, it ain't a real truck.

Just found this. Interesting ...

For the cargo bed, a separate subframe is bolted to the unibody, creating a removable bed system that is characteristic of the Comanche's design. This rear section, which supports the bed, follows a more traditional body-on-frame approach, making the Comanche a hybrid vehicle with a unibody front and a frame-supported rear.

That isn't a 1999 model. The Comanche was made 1986-1992, someone likely swapped a later model 1997-2001 Cherokee XJ front end on it, which is a pretty popular swap since the Comanche is almost identical to a Cherokee in the front half of it.

Comanches are rare, so they often bring high prices like you see here, especially for a 4.0L. If the seller is truly trying to pass it for a 1999 model year vehicle I would pass on it, since that is definitely a lie.

The Commanches are pretty rare so they’re going to be more expensive than you expect. They don’t make these past ‘92. A non-renix version in 91-92 would be pretty fun for a Home Depot truck. Most of the short beds are 2wd. I’d like to convert one to 4wd with a 231 and Dana 35 and run 31’s or 32’s.

I looked for 3 years trying to find a 91-92 , 4.0 , 5 spd. ,4X4 , metric 1 ton long bed. No Joy , I ended up buying a one owner 04 Tacoma TRD 3.4 ,5 spd. 4X4 , access cab with a 6'2" bed.

They get rusty under the seat areas. Floor boards and rocker panels. First place to look at.
