Here is a short how to install the dot lp6 in a tj as well as my thoughts on their performance.
Wha you’ll need:
You need the universal no kit Baja designs lp6 pair. Not the jk not the jl but the universal lights. They come with the lights and a male deutsch connector to wire and plug into the light.
You’ll also need a bracket. I used the divergent motor sport bracket
https://divergentmotorsports.com/store/p/baja-designs-lp-6-headlight-brackets-for-jeep-tjlj
You’ll need some waterproof crimp connectors, a wire stripper, and some extra wire to add in the day time running light. As well as a drill and a drill bit to open up 1 of the holes that the stock lights use since we’ll be using the same 3 holes the stock headlight holes in the grill but bored out to a larger bolt.
So for physical removing of the old headlight you will take the headlight bezel off, unplug the stock headlight, and remove the 3 bolts on the back side of the grill that hold the headlight on the grill. This will have the headlight and the assembly it uses to hold and angle the head light.
For Installation you’ll need to drill out one of the holes ( the smallest one which i forgot exactly it’s positioned but you’ll know) don’t forget to paint it after you drill. Then I would mount the headlight to the bracket using the 4 bolts, 2 on each side. Making the back non adjustable bolt as tight as you can while still being able to adjust the light. The front adjustable you can thread down but don’t have it tight yet.
Then you can put the light in and thread the 3 bolts through the back of the grill and into the bracket.
For adjusting the lights, you can access the front bolts you have loose from the front when the bezel is off. Just angle them how you want and with an open ended wrench tighten it down. Then you can put the bezel back with 2 of the 3 screws if you don’t want to remove the light again. The top inside and bottom are accessible but the top outside screw would need to have the light removed again to get access to it so you can decide if you want to remove it again or not.
Wiring is super easy. As of me writing this I don’t have any reason to add any resistors or anything like some other vehicles may need. These lights are a 12-24v. I also didn’t like the idea of adding extra wiring and cost to buy more connectors to make an adapter. The lp6 comes with a male deutsch connector for each light so that’s what I used. I cut off the h4 connector. In my picture the red is high beams, purple is low beams, black is ground. High beam is pin 4 (top left when looking at the back of the light) low beam is pin 1(top right) and ground is pin 2 (bottom right). Then I added another wire in pin 3 (bottom left) to be the dtrl. I ran then back in the harness to the closest dtrl spot which wasn’t far back and was a purple wire with a stripe for me.
The deutsch connector that comes with the kit is pretty easy. You crimp on the pins to the wire then stick the wire through the back and up the front till it clicks. Once all 4 pins are in you put the front orange face on which locks them in.
Review:
At the sale price that I got these for ($630) plus the $75 dollar bracket these are not cheap. These are priced to be on par with all the top brands such as kc, vision x, morimoto, etc. so why didn’t I just pick the other options? 1. Life time warranty 2. To match the rest of the aux lighting I plan on getting. 3. Better output than the completion, not by a lot but on paper show to be better lumens and candela. 4. Beam pattern with the use of projectors is amazing and I will show that in the pics.
Besides price I think looks will be the hot topic. Looks are subjective but these are not close to looking retro or original to the tj styling which I know a lot of people will be very opinionated on. With how my jeep is built I don’t think it’s sticking to the retro look. I try to make it as clean and original but prioritize function first. With aluminum bumpers and more aluminum fenders and armor planned I felt that these wouldn’t be too crazy. But that’s just me.
Performance is amazing. Coming from a knock off amazon trucklite led these are far better in everyway. My problem with the truck lite is it shines light directly up. You never notice it untill your in rain or even worst, snow. Then every thing is shined directly above the light about 3 feet from the windshield. It made snow storms impossible. I would turn my headlights off to see. The light output of the truck lites were good and the cut off was ok. The pattern was unimpressive with it being very short and narrow. It also has weird dead spots and hot spots in some places as well. Overall they were fine for Amazon knock offs but would be very upset if I was paying for the real ones.
The Baja uses 6 projectors so the pattern is textbook good. It’s big, wide, even, and a perfect cut off all the way across the top. The high beams add spot directly in-front adding below the cut off and above making long straight stretches very nice but also adds a great deal of height and width for the back roads. The color temperature is warm for a led at 5k which is close to natural sun temperature. I have zero complaints. I could enjoy some Ditch lights but I’ve never seen a headlight get that wide anyways.
