I have a 97 TJ with 76K miles and plan to run the TAT in July 26. I realize it's not a really technical trail, but it is a lot of miles. I'll be replacing belts, hoses and all the obvious stuff. My question concerns the u-joints. What are your opinions about changing them out before the trip. They show no sign of needing replacement at this time.

I'd throw a set in the tool bag before I'd replace a set showing no signs of issues, personally. That give you the added security of having a spare set if you break one.

I haven't run it, but I've done several trips along the route running interstate.

I'd be sure to bring extra fuel storage, Kansas and some of the western state have pretty big fuel gaps.

Thanks. Yes I was planning on a tool bag, hi-lift, shovel etc. Maybe an extra snatch block for the winch. Potable water, 1st aid kit for sure, wasn't sure about extra fuel. I haven't bought the maps yet but it's reported fuel is available at 150 to 200 mile intervals.

Even if you never use it, I'd bring extra fuel personally. Just like a winch, pays for itself the first time you need it.

Never know when you pass the station at 50 and end up having to make 200+.

That E-W run through Kansas can be tricky, there's almost always a headwind in late summer and the grade change can fool you since it seems relatively flat.

Looking at the map from that link, the eastern end looks at least partially like the MABDR, which I've probably done 100 miles of.

Navigation is harder than you expect, I'd want a "trained" co-pilot if you can.

Bag extra U joints. But bring good shoes for walking miles if the need arises. I did SAR for a while and was amazed how easy it is to get screwed up. DAHIK.

Or which wife? =)

The one that asked if he got it in prison :D ... with a machine made from a cassette player, Bic pen tube, and guitar string needle.

A friend of mine at a shop did tats for correctional officers. They would give him confiscated home brew machines.

I gave my friend artistic freedom, but drew the line at the ghetto machine :D

I was taught how to make those as a kid. Had someone come in my shop and apply with one of those set ups. Told him I could count 20 health violations before he finished pulling it out
