I have to hand it to @ibasket for having to persistance for getting those installed that way. Most people would give up and do them right.
It turns out if you put the circled section on the top on one pad and the bottom on the other, if makes it really hard to take the caliper on and off, and it isn't supposed to be
So he doesn’t know how to install brake pads or control arm bolts. You should take a ride in his MR2 with him.
I've only lost ONE brake caliper bolt on that thing.
