The metal coolant tube that comes out of the water pump and makes a bend to connect to the heater core rubber line developed a hole. I've got a replacement tube coming but it looks like I'm going to have to pull the water pump to unscrew it. Is that that case? If so, I guess I need to go ahead and get a water pump coming since this is the original afaict.

Bend the old tube straight to remove it, then install one of these with a longer hose.

That's certainly a thought but I have to wonder why they used a metal tube anyway? I can't swear to it, but i think I saw a diagram somewhere showing it's on the return from the heater core. If it were on the output it might make sense...but there has to be a reason the designers included a bespoke pipe instead of just a nipple.

I've wondered this same thing, and if I have to replace another water pump, I'm replacing that tube with a hose. I'm content to find out the hard way why the engineers designed it as they did.

My assumption is that the engineers wanted sufficient clearance on the belt system and or protection/clearance from an exploding belt. And it just unburies the connecting point for the hose...hard enough to wrangler a constant tension clamp.

If you really want to over engineer a solution throw some AN fittings at it. =)

If I did that I would pay particular attention to where the hose to makes the tight turn to lay against the valve cover. If it looks like it is in danger of kinking, I would use one of these…
