My 05 tj just started making a loud howling noise in the r front. It is speed dependant and also changes pitch when on or off of gas. I don't think it is the diff as it had a fluid change 5k mi ago. Could the hub or bearing do this?

That is a typical symptom of a wheel hub bearing going out. It's also possible with the bearings in a differential.

It's not too expensive or difficult to replace the hub bearing assembly. If it's a differential it's a bit more complicated, but not terrible.

If you've got some chassis ears you could isolate it to be sure by clamping one on each front hub somewhere like the upper steering knuckle and one on the front diff and running the cables up a control arm.

It sounds more high pitched like I would assume a hub would sound.

Drive it and put an infrared on it

Or jack it up and check for play

Its trying to tell you something

Had a friend help me diag it and it isnt in the front at all. It sounds like a rear pinion bearing. The noise is traveling up the driveshaft and coming through the transfer case. I would rather have had a front end issue. I could do that myself.

Update. It was the pinion bearing. Had to rebuild the diff. Put an Eaton Tru trac in while it was apart.
